Well today I made the appointment to have Maggie spayed. She goes in Monday morning. She'll stay overnight at the Vet and then I can bring her home the next day if all goes well, which I am praying it does.

I know it is the best thing to do for her and it HAS to be done, but I can't help but be a basket case over it.

I did talk to the Vet last night. She called to answer my questions. One nice thing is that when I asked about ACE, she said "we don't use ACE on any of our animals here." Whew!! One worry off my mind.

She was very thorough in her explanation of everything to me. She's really a good Vet and very lucky to have her. And surprisingly, the cost was way less than what I had anticipated. Under $200 complete! For New York, that's a bargain, believe me. I've heard of people paying up to $450 for spaying with all the "extras." Mine includes the anesthesia, overnight stay, surgery and stitch removal 9 days later. Pain pills are extra if I want them. Dr. says probably not needed since they are pretty drugged for a day or two afterwards and don't feel much pain. But they are available if I feel Maggie needs them.

And she was quite thorough in her explanations of the after-care which we have to do. I do feel much better after talking to the Vet. But, I am still so worried. It is a very serious operation and one never knows. (Ok, sorry, I'm such a worry wart type. I worry excessively, I know, but it is compulsive and I can't help it. My shrink has made a fortune off that neurosis alone! :) )

Anyway, I hope I survive my night without Maggie. She's not been crate trained, but I think she'll be ok because she'll be drugged and most probably asleep most of the time pre and post op.

Sorry for this long post. I'm just worried and anxious and depressed about it and wanted to get some of it off my chest.

Thanks for listening!! You guys are the greatest!

Gosh! I can't believe spaying cost that much. Our vet we use for non emergency stuff charges $35 to spay. That includes every thing. He is very cheap though and I'm not sure what other vets in the area charge but I would never have guessed it to be over $100. I'm sure Maggie will be fine and it sounds like she will be in good hands. I know it will be hard to leave her for a whole day and night without worrying but just remember your doing her the biggest favor ever. :D

They will not let her come home that day? When I had Nikki spayed the vet did the surgery at noon, and let me take her home around 6:00 that evening. I had to watch her closely (all se did was lay there). Then I had to call in first thing in the morning are report to the vet how she was doing.
I am a worrier myself. I told the vet, I can't bear the thought of her in a cage without her mommy close by, that comment has work for four major surgeries now. But it is hard work that night (actually around 3:00 on the morning) when she is still drugged but wants to try and move, forget about anymore sleep that night. You have to sit up and literally watch her.

Dan-I know how you feel. Jazmine is at the vets office getting spayed right now. They said depending how she was with the anesthesia depends on either if they are going to keep her overnight or not. I called the vet about an hour ago-and they said she did fine and that she is ready to go! I was a nervous wreck all day today. And I am leaving now to get her. I can't wait to see her! Maggie will do fine! I know you will be worried-but it's for the best!
Tell Maggie-Jazz says "hi, and not to worry" or should I be telling you that! ha ha...
Good Luck!

Dan, Lacie did pretty well with her surgery except she got diahrea everytime she heard a womans voice. The vet finally put in the office on a nice blanket with the receptionist and they did not want to keep her over night because they felt she was upset with being away from me. I took her home the vet called me back after hours that night to check on her and was relieved that she had no more diahrea and was sleeping peacefully. I spent the night on the floor in a sleeping bag snuggling Lacie. Hang in there and remember we are all worriers!

I'm always a basket case too Dan :) Could she not come home on the day of her spay? We have always been able to bring ours home straight after surgery. It might be worth asking your vet about. Try not to worry too much.

Dan-

I know exactly how you feel. Lucy was spayed one week ago today. My vet charged $100 plus $30 for the pre-operative blood work. The cost included one overnight stay, either the night before or the night after but it wasn't mandadatory. I dropped her off in the morning and picked her up about 3:00. She looked miserable. The car ride home made her sick and she threw up four times when she got home. I offered her some water and she would't take it. She did lick some ice cubes out of my hand. She was pretty miserable that night and couldn't get comfortable. I finally gave her part of an aspirin which helped her relax. She tore at my heart strings with that pathetic look of "why did you do this to me" I put her to bed and she wouldn't go outside until almost 7:30, which is late for her. She finally drank some chicken broth and went back to bed. When I came home from work, she was still a little out if it but was perky enough to eat. Then about 7:00 (this is the second evening) she went and found her favorite toy! I knew then that she was better.

We haven't had any troubles since then. She hasn't even tried to lick her stitches once. Maggie will be fine and so will you. If it makes you feel better, maybe the vet will let you take her home that first night. But then again, you might do better not having to see her not feeling well.

Hope all goes well! Just tell Maggie what I told Lucy "I'm sorry to do this to you, but trust me you don't want to have any babies."

P.S. What kind of a parent would you be if you didn't worry :)

Thank you all SO MUCH for your support and reassuring words of comfort for both me and Maggie. It sure helps ease my mind.

As for bringing her home early, that is a possibility according to the vet, but it is a "wait and see" thing with her. She does surgeries on Monday and it depends on how many she has to do and what other "emergencies" may come in to the office as to when in the day she may get to Maggie's surgery.

Also, if Maggie comes through the operation and it is early enough and she's up and somewhat energetic, the Vet says she'll call and I can take Maggie home without the overnight stay. So it just depends on how everything falls together on Monday.

Anyway, if it means Maggie gets through this better, then she'll just need to spend the night at the Vet's office for one night. I'm sure it won't kill her to be without me for one night, although it might kill me :(

Thanks again everyone for your helpful reassurance.

Lisa: My best wishes for a speedy recovery for Jazmine. I'm sure you were as worried as I am now.

I'll keep you posted on Maggie's progress. Thanks again!
