Our Sam is 2 1/2 yrs old. Just over the past month we noticed both of his sides (towards his tail) were black. I took him to the vet and she thinks it might be D(something)Mange...she did a skin scrape but I haven't heard anything back from her yet. This was on Saturday. She said if it isn't mange it may be alopecia, which is seasonal.

Other than that, he's a healthy guy. I figured I'd get other Boxer owners' thoughts. Has anyone ever come across this before?

Thanks for your help!

I am very surprised that you didn't hear the result of the skin scraping. Your vet should have been able to tell you within a few minutes of taking the scraping. I would call the vet to see if she actually has the results and maybe forgot to tell you?? (My guess would be that the results are negative and the vet thought she told you, but really didn't. But I would call just to make sure.)

Sounds like alopecia to me. Esp b/c of the black skin.

We got Yogi's skin scrape results right in the vet's office about 5 min after they did the scrape. Call your vet if your concerned....

Hope it works out

RE: Hair Loss

Hi,

My dog Kaine suffered from Seasonal Flank Alopecia really bad this year. I have great photo's of it under my gallery. They may help you decide what it may be.

I would guess it's alopecia from the location. Don't know a lot about it, but from the name, I do know it's on the flanks. :) Stella had D-mange and it was more tiny spots where the hair would fall out. The spots would discolor to black (all skin does when it's exposed to the air for some time), but the spots were tiny. They started on her head above her eyes and spread to her legs and back.

I agree with everyone else. When Stella was scraped for mange, the vet brought back results within 5 minutes.

Keep us updated!
