Lump under chin

Hello,

I noticed a few days ago that Joe had a lump under his chin, near his neck about the size of a golf ball (the lump is under the skin). We went to the vet yesterday for a check-up resulting from his last illness (fever of 105 and fainted - they never determined the problem but he is doing much better - he had heart tests and whole nine) and I inquired about the lump. The vet was under the assumption that it was a swollen lymph node but aspirated (sp?) the area just to be safe. I'm not too concerned about cancer because he is only 10 months old but he has been so sick for those 10 months that it still worries me. Not too mention that the lump is huge and to me, if it is a lymph node, it means that he is sick.

Suggestions anyone?

My dog Teak has what are called Mast Cell Tumors. We have already had 2 removed, one was cancerous. He currently has two more, one on his lower neck. They are very common in boxers. Right now we are trying to treat it with prednisone sp? and I am not sure it is helping. We will probably have to have them removed. Basically, they can just pop anywhere but are usually (I think) not attached to any organs. Maybe ask your vet about the possibility of it being one. Good luck!

Lumps

My Barkley got some lumps underneath her chin that would constantly break open and bleed when she played with her chew toys. It was almost like dog acne. I read in a boxer book to put Iodine on them and low and behold they cleared up and hasn't had any since. I hope this helps. :) The Liles Family

Please get a biopsy! My intention is not to scare you but a 10 month old dog can still get lymphoma, and the first sign is swollen lymph nodes. Just apirating may not show lymphoma. It didn't for my dog. Mast cell is also a huge problem with Boxers. If your pup has been sick off and on for this long I would seriously consider doing a full "cancer" work up, and finding another vet! No vet should assume anything about swollen lymph nodes!! There are other things this could be from so please don't panic, but lumps and bumps are nothing to play around with in a boxer. Lymph nodes can enlarge due to several reasons:

Inflammation -A reaction to a foreign body might cause this.

Infection - Bacterial, viral, or fungal infections can cause them to enlarge. This enlargement might be a sign that they are performing their job as expected. When the infection subsides the lymph node should return to normal size.

Cancer -The most common cancer that causes this problem is called lymphoma (also know as lymphosarcoma)

Time is of the essence when dealing with cancer and especially with lymphoma. Dogs do get acne as mentioned but I have never seen golf ball sized acne. I am sending positive vibes that it is nothing serious.

You might want to feel the other lymph nodes and see if they are swollen.
Found on each rear leg on the opposite side of the knee. They will feel mushy if they aren't swollen or you may not feel anything at all. But if they are swollen you should be able to tell, they will feel hard.
