My wonderful 7 year old male Boxer Luger has Lymphoma, we are devastated. We got him 6 1/2 years ago when our first boxer died suddenly. We have decided not to go thru with chemo, he hates the vet and would have to spend one day a week for 20 weeks there, I am struggling with our decision. Anyone else going thru this terrible situation?

I"m so sorry to hear about Luger :( I have never dealt with lymphoma, but I know it's a nasty cancer and have read far too many heartbreaking posts in here from parents dealing with it. Sending some positive vibes and wishing strength for you and Luger grouphugicon

I have not experienced it myself. Just from your post though, it sounds like you kept his wants first. If he hates the vet, why subject him to it MORE when he feels bad. I'm sorry to hear about the situation and we are sending positive (((vibes))) and boxer kisses.

Just a year ago we went thru the same thing with Hurley. The best they could give us was another 4 months with chemo. My vet highly recommended putting him on Prednisone only and enjoying the heck out of him for the few remaining weeks he had left. He was like a pup again for those few weeks. We spoiled him rotten!!!! Then one day he woke up with trouble breathing and went down hill from there. My wonderful vet came in on a Saturday night to put him down. We buried him under a beautiful shade tree. I wouldn't take anything for those last few weeks. I cried for weeks--I didn't think I'd ever get over it. And, I really haven't, but I remember more of the good times now and thank God we had the time we did with him. He was just 8. Only you know your dog and what will be right in your case. My prayers are with you.

I am so sorry - my heart goes out to you. I lost my first Boxer to cancer and its devastating. I agree with the others here - you know Luger best and you are giving him the greatest gift you can by doing what is best for him, even over your own wants. Please give him an extra hug from us and hugs to you as well.

You'll know what to do sounds like you already put him first. We watched a neighbor selfishly let his poor Standard Poodle suffer and we promised each other we would never let our love or emotions or our own needs above our boy,we had to make that awful choice to let him rest.It broke our hearts it's only been 38 days and we still question if we did the right thing but we know we did. You'll know the signs, some of my boys was he peed on our bed and he never done that ever before,he started to pee inside,we watched him just stare of into the wall, sometimes he was miss judging his distance and banged his head into the wall,he couldn't settle down he was in to much pain and this was all in 5 days. You'll know love him take extra pictures, and video, give him what ever he wants and stuff he was never allowed to have.My boy got hamburger gravy over potatoes and carrots he loved it.Everything I ate and he wanted he got.He played with his friends the day before he was happy and right up to that same day even in pain he still rolled on his back twisting all about feet in the air just like there was nothing wrong 4 hrs later he was gone.Strangled bowl.

How did you find out that he has lymphoma? Did he show any symptoms or different behavior? Your baby should not go through the suffering of chemo especially him being uncomfortable around doctors and unfamiliar place. We decided same thing for our dog with Arrhythmogenic Cardiomyopathy and Mast Cell Cancer. We just spoiling him and enjoying him a lot while he is with us. Somehow I am crying now. My best wishes to you and your baby.

I am very sorry to hear about Luger. My sister's boxer was diagnosed with Lymphoma at age 5. They also decided against chemotherapy. They went to see a holistic vet and put their little girl on Prednisone. They went with an all protein no carb diet with many natural supplements. Lily lived 5 more happy months after the original vets told them to expect 5 weeks. Sending prayers

So sorry to hear about Luger. We are going through the same thing with our 8 year old boxer girl at the moment.

She was diagnosed with hypercalcemia in June and was treated with high dose steroids, antibiotics and diuretics. We thought she had been cured, but it all came back in September.

We don't know exactly whether she has lymphoma or a tumour as we decided against taking her on a 5 hour journey to the nearest vet hospital and subjecting her to loads of tests, only to give her the exact same treatment she is having now.

We too decided not to go through chemo as it doesn't cure her and would only give her an extra few months, and we felt they were for us, not her.

So she is now on 6 steroids a day, down from 8 recently, diuretics to help with the bloating, anti sickness tablets and antibiotics. We don't know how long we have with her.

I hope Luger is doing well and you are able to keep him comfortable. We have so many questions, but don't know anyone else who has gone through this.

Big hugs to Luger, hope him and Sasha have many happy days ahead of them.
