Just have to complain to somebody who will understand. I went to my local animal shelter Friday as I am looking for another dog because Chewbacca could really use a canine companion [a pet for my pet-how nuts!]. There was a gorgeous white male boxer there. I asked the shelter staff about him and they said he had an owner that was coming to get him. A little more talking and I find out this poor dog was there because he had been running loose and somebody brought him in. The shelter found his owner who couldn't come up with proof of rabies vaccination so they wouldn't release him, so fault number 1-the poor boy wasn't even current on shots. That was on Tuesday and that pretty boy was still there Friday! Apparently the owner was trying to scrape up the cash to bail out his dog. It gets worse..the shelter lady said he definitely wanted his dog back because he was planning on breeding him!! Keep in mind this is a WHITE boxer. I about went nuts! I gave that poor shelter woman an education on the reasons why a white boxer can't be bred, I know it's not her fault but I just had to. Maybe the owner is just uneducated and doesn't know any better than to not breed a white boxer, but don't you think a person should at least know the basics about a breed before getting one? Anyway, this is going to sound just awful but the lady told me that by law where I live they have to hold a dog for seven days and then if they are not claimed by the owner they can be adopted so I told her if the owner couldn't come up with the cash to get his dog by the seven days that I wanted him. I would feel a little guilty taking a dog that I know had belonged to somebody else, but on the other hand I couldn't imagine leaving Chewbacca in the shelter that long while I was trying to find enough money to bail him out of doggie jail!

You are right in every way! No way could I leave Dempsey somewhere once I knew his location. (I know Boxer's are wily, but how did he manage to escape anyway???) I'm glad to know that (hopefully) chewbacca will get a new pal. Good luck, in no way would it be wrong to claim that pup. It's a service to him in my opinion.

don't think you're wrong at all to think he would be better off with your family!! If he can't scrape together the $$$ to get the dog out of the shelter, how does he plan to take care of it if it gets hurt?
Not to mention that if for some unthinkable reason Grumpy was in a shelter, and I couldn't bring her home, I would be sitting in that freakin shelter all day long with her!!!! we all would if it was one of our babies!
Good luck to that poor boy - I hope he ends up with you or at least someone gives his owner a good lecture.

I am keeping my fingers crossed the jerk doesn't come up with the spare cash and the boy finally gets the secure, loving home every dog deserves.

Ohhhh! I am so hoping this person (using the term loosely) can't come up with the cash! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he can come home with you and Chewbacca! Keep us posted!!!! He sounds like he needs a responsible parent to take good care of him!!!

Thanks all for the support and encouragement! The boxer owner [I just can't bring myself to call him boxer dad] has until Tuesday at 4:00 pm to pick him up. Supposedly he will be coming to get him today - I will be keeping in contact with the shelter and I'll let you all know how it turns out.
