I have a female Boxer, 4 yrs. old. She is losing her hair in blotches. We took her to the Vet and had her Thyroid check and the results came back fine. They suggested taking her to a skin doctor to see if she has any allergies. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what may be causing this, or had any experience with something like this. Thanks in advance,
Sharon

hair loss

Our boxer, Adrian, had hair loss in patches just behind her ribs on both sides this spring (this is our first year with her, a Boxer rescue). I read several related postings on this webstie and decided upon giving her Evening primrose oil, 2 capsules once a day. It's been a month and her hair has pretty much all filled in and her coat is very soft and silky now. We wasted $400 testing for Thyroid disease on what we have learned is a common skin problem with Boxers. It's called seasonal allopecia. We wrap our capsules in a tablespoon of cream cheese.....she eagerly anticipates this "treat".

The other suggestion I read was a 1/2 cup of canned unsweetened pumpkin mixed with food. The vitamin A does the trick.

Good Luck!

I s she in season? It may be hormonal.

Tess has been losing her hair and has had pups, the vet said it was hormonal. We are now giving her a teaspoon of olive oil in her dinner and her coat is coming on a treat

No, Adrian was fixed last summer. Other postings have indicated that it is not exclusive to females and occurs twice a year, spring and fall.

One time, mom took me to the groomers for a routine shampoo, and when I came back I started losing patches of hair, on the same spot on each side of my back. Mom gave it a while, assuming it was an allergic reaction to the shampoo, but when it didn't get better, she started giving me a little concoction each night of a scoop of nutritional brewer's yeast flakes, plus one egg, a dollop of extra virgin olive oil, and a dollop of Bragg's unfiltered apple cider vinegar. My hair started growing back right away! I haven't had a problem since, and she's cut back to only making it for me two or three times a week. I could eat it morning noon and night!! I start drooling uncontrollably when she makes it. I love apple cider vinegar, mom even uses it liberally with vegetable mush mixtures she makes. lovicon

Hair loss that doesn't grow back could be due to a serious condition called "Cushings Disease." Left untreated, more serious health conditions can occur.
The first sign of Cushings Disease is hair loss. It usually starts falling out equally on both sides of the hind end of the dog. Always check with your vet for a proper diagnosis.
Best of Luck to you,

The only expirence I have had with hariloss is when Max was diagnosed with Demodex. They discovered it doing a skin scrape, however I think it is more common in puppies, but I would double check. Max lost a lot of hair in big patches all over his body, it took about a good 3 months to get rid of it and another month to get his hair back.
I hope this helps, GOOD LUCK

I'm newby!!!

Was just curious if this message went back 3 years. I notice the date on this thread is 2001. I have a thyroid boxer boy and he loses hair every spring.
Let me know if you still read these
Thanx
