I purchased a puppy from Pets Plus on February 21, 2004. He is 4 months old. Since we have owned him, he has very loose runny stools. Seen the vet twice and both times the stools came back negative. He was on Precise, then I switched him to Natural Choice, and it seemed to get worse. He is now on boiled chicken and rice for the last two days, and it is still loose. I am at a loss. He seems fine other than that. Plays, eats, drinks. What can I do? He has been given his shots both visits.

Whenever one of mine gets loose stools I feed them a little canned pumpkin. I also cut out any treats or little extras until they are better. I hope this helps!

I am happy that it helped him. I had a lot of trouble finding a food that agreed with both of mine. Each one is so different and when they are pups any change seems to upset there systems. I finally ended up with Natural Balance Duck and Potato which they both digest well. Good luck. Lisa

Fecals are not 100% positive and coccidia sometimes can be hard to detect in the fecals. My guess is your puppy has coccidia. Any puppy I have ever seen come from a petstore, broker, or commercial breeding facility (which supplies the Petstores no matter what they tell you), is 100% guarentee for coccidia. Treatment for coccidia is a 10 day regime of medicine, and the Petstore should pay for treatment.

What is coccidia? Would he still be acting fine, playing, eating drinking, etc. He is very active. I have also tried the canned pumpkin, and it has really helped. He is now on Science Diet Puppy Food, and so far has been doing pretty good. The vet did decide to de-worm him again, so today I noticed loose stools again since I gave him the second dosage last night.

Coccidia is an intestional parasite, but this one is a one-celled protozon.
Some puppies get sicker with it than others, it can depends upon the level of infestation.

You can do a search by coccidia and should beable to pull up previous posts/information.

Coccida

Syra is 8weeks old we got her from a bad home and took her to the Vet the next day> Vet says she is little, but healthy. Stool was neg. 7 days later she had bloody stool and diarreha back to the vet. Syra weight 3.3 lbs and has COCCIDA we are on the fourth day of meds and still lots of diarreha she is playful at times sleeps a-lot and eats well. It;s has taken us a year to heal from the lost of our last dog and hoped Syra would fill the void and so we pray she will make it. many hours of lost sleep and lots of cleaning But she is worth it. I can only hope in a week she is healthy and starting to gain some weight. We have her on a rice meat diet. any help or ideas are very welcomed we have never had a dog with coccida.
