Loose pooh, possible allergies or colitis? (Long)

We got Brutus at 12 weeks. His was on IAMs for puppies and we switched to TO SW Chicken. His pooh was decent but he had a fair amount of gas. After two bags of SW Chicken we went to TO Ocean Blue. Reseable poo but very skinny and gassy. He was dewormed by his breeder, checked neg on his first fecal float but at 4 months, I found a 4" roundworm in his feces and so he was dewormed.

Just before 5 months, I went out of town on business. While I was gone he still was struggling to gain weight, decent poo and stinky gas. So at 7 months, he switched to Canidae. He gained 5lbs in a week, still decent feces and smelly gas.

I returned home at 8 months and he started having runny pooh. Initially we thought it could be just excitement that I was home and the extra attention he was getting. After 5-6 days, we began to worry and his energy dropped. Gone was the bouncy boy who could go crazy in the backyard for hours. Now we had a boy who could barely finish a 10min walk. Heavy breathing and no desire to eat.

There was no blood in the stool but slimy mucous. The vet ran a number of tests on blood, electrolites and feces. No worms but dewormed again.

Low red blood cells, 32, and low protein. The vet prescribed Science Diet I/D, metronidazob and vitamin drops. Seemed ironic to change from a food with all the vitamins to a food without and a need to supplement with vitamins.

Pooh did go from puddles of liquid to cow patties but still obvious slimy mucous. His energy improved but not to the crazy boxer style.

I was unhappy with the ingredients in the I/D and the amount he needed 5-6cups/day. So I considered allergies to chicken and/or corn. I switched to CA Natural Lamb and Rice for a protein/carb change and highly digestible. Con't the vita-drops and anti-biotics.

His energy is right back to the insane boxer level, his coat is soft and shiny and his eye boogers are only bad in the morning. Unfortunately, the pooh is still only mostly formed and soft. Better but not like before. On the up side, no stinky gas.

We are also now having backslides in his kennel potty training and I don't know if it is related to the anemia he experienced in May or not.

Thanks for you time.

Sorry to hear your boy has had so much trouble. I had a lot of stomach issues with Bubbie when he was a baby. Turns out he just can't eat any type of dry dog food. I now do home cooking, and he is doing great. Hope you are able to find a solution for Brutus soon!

Poor pup, how old is he now? Has the vet considered scoping him to look for IBD or other bowel issues? My boy had runny stool the first year of this life but straightened out, but his bloodwork was always good. My last sweet girl, right before she died (unrelated to her belly BTW so no worries there :)) , was to be scoped and that is what made me think of it. Just a thought-best of luck

At the beginning of my dog's life I had a very similar problem with his loose stool. He was about three months old and was fed Canidae. Obviously the protein was too high for him. So I switched to Timberwolf Black Forest (only 22% protein) and he did much better. Now he is a year old and his stomach is much better. Now he is on Timberwolf Lamb and Apple. Perhaps you have found the right food for your dog.

He is now 9 months old. I am keeping my fingers crossed that a few more days/weeks with this food/med combo will keep him with the right weight and firm up his stool.

We haven't scoped him yet.

Thank you all for your thoughtful words. I would love if this was just growing up hiccups.

Could very well be. Boxers can have sensitive stomachs and the first year can be bad. Like I said, my boy had a lot of runny stool the first year but now he rarely has a problem. Good luck

I know exactly what you are going through!! Sarge had been having loose soft stools and I switched him over to lamb and rice. He was cured almost instantly!! So I have pretty much figured out that he can't tolerate beef, wheat, or corn so I am trying to completely avoid those.
