Looking for a boxer in Maine

Hi there... I am a devoted mom to my 11 month old boxer, Max, but we just lost his "big brother" Casey, our 10 year old Collie. Although it was a very tough loss and I was not really in a big hurry to get another dog initially, the house is just too quiet and poor Max has no one to play with anymore. I contacted the breeder we got Max from but she had her female spayed after that last litter. I am hoping to find another breeder with "big" boxers like Max. He is up to between 70 and 80 pounds right now and hasn't even filled out yet! Any direction you could give me to find a good breeder would be wonderful....I am willing to drive to NH or MA if necessary to get another dog like Max.

I know that rescues are wonderful but unless they are a puppy, I could not do it. I have a young child, live in a suburban area and am too nervous of the many problems I have read about with rescued boxers. There is no way I could take one in, get attached, then lose him to biting someone. Also, I am sure that the rescues would not like the fact that I work during the day and he would need to be crated from 7am till 3pm after he is housebroken!

Hang in there, it is hard work finding a reputable breeder, but they are out there. Good luck in your search!

puppy quest

In the event you can't find a puppy...I adopted from Second Chance Boxer Rescue (www.secondchanceboxer.com) Chloe was 6 months old and came from a pet store. She had essentially lived her whole life there. There was nothing wrong with her emotionally or physically except she was too expensive for someone to buy, and had overstayed her welcome at the pet store! (too big for the cage) she is the sweetest, most loving, gentle dog I have ever met-not a mean bone in her body. We constantly get stopped on the street and when we are out and about to have people pet her and comment on her sweet disposition (from babies to elderly) she treats each one very gently (from the 1 year old that stuck her vanilla ice cream hands in her mouth, and the 3 year old that poked her in the eye!-LOL) She is also a very good looking boxer (not that I'm biased!)

Second Chance does a REMARKABLE job telling prospective owners if the dogs have any issues, medical or otherwise. Some dogs do. Some should not be placed with other dogs, some can't be around cats, and some don't do well in homes with children. I understand your reservations, our family had the same kinds of concerns. There are some dogs out there that simply drew the short straw and end up in rescue for reasons that have nothing to do with temperment or behavior. The dogs at SCBR are kept in foster homes and are evaluated for temperment and medical issues, and often live in homes with other dogs, cats, & children (both young children and older children). They are observed in many different types of situations. Initially I had my eye on another dog and they were very up front about stating what the dog's issues were. They would much rather keep a dog in foster care rather than make a match that doesn't work out. They also do occasionally get young dogs and puppies. No offense, but if you have to keep a puppy crated that long, how is it supposed to be trained if it's not being let out of the crate to toilet? (just gentle curiosity here)
