Hi! I'm new to this forum. I'm also new to having puppies for the first time. Can someone give me the name of a book that has everything I need to know about breeding, pregnancy, delivery, taking care of new puppies, etc....
Thanks, I really appreciate it!

Since you're new to this forum, you probably aren't yet aware that breeding is a sensitive issue here. Mostly, it's frowned upon, unless the health of both the sire and dam have been thoroughly tested in advance (not just the vet saying, "they're healthy") and the sire and the dam have been evaluated to be really good examples of Boxer conformation and to complement each other in the match. The best place to get good advice and learn about breeding is to find a mentor, an experienced and reputable Boxer breeder who can guide you through all the steps along the way, and, BTW, let you know if your dog or bitch is actually breeding quality.

Otherwise, in general, we urge that people spay or neuter their dogs to avoid adding to the huge overpopulation of dogs that end up being euthanized. And spaying and neutering are healthier for the animal in that it won't be getting mammary cancer, or testicular cancer, or a uterine infection that could kill it, or die in labor, or any number of other conditions that I'm sure go on and on.

So, if you haven't started the process yet, I would seriously, seriously think it over. If you already have puppies on the way, I would try to find someone in your area who could help guide you through the process. Check with your local Boxer club, or ask your vet to recommend someone. You have to put the health of the animal first above all and make appropriate decisions that will foster this goal.

Thanks for the information!

Thank you for the information! I thought I may have hit a nerve, but wasn't sure. My children & I love dogs and they are thrilled about having her and that fact that we could someday have cute little puppies!!! She is a very good looking dog and I do believe we have a good match.

I do appreciate your honesty!!!!

No book, or books, will teach you "everything you need to know" about breeding, whelping, and rearing. There have been several discussions in the forums on the topic, many of which have included references to other resources, so a search will get you started. However, having an experienced breeder to mentor you through the process is invaluable. There are some things that can only be learned by exprience - such as knowing when the bitch is in distress and needs to go to the vet, or knowing when a puppy's cries are normal and when they are a danger sign, or a myriad of other things that newbies often overlook with tragic consequences.

This site has some information to get you started: www.learntobreed.com - I particularly recommend you read the Questionnaire and the Virtual Breeding sections, though I suspect it's too late for those to make a difference.

Your local Boxer Club is the best place to start looking for a mentor (or, possibly at this point, someone who will at least help you get the bitch and pups through the whelping with the least amount of trauma) - a listing is here: www.americanboxerclub.org/us-boxer-clubs.html
