Last night I went to the mall to get some Christmas shopping done. I do not know why I do it but everytime I go there I always stop at the pet shop. So last night I start toward the shop. They have a little play/ closed off corner there. Whats in there? A tiny little Boxer boy. I walk over and start giving him lots of lovin's. They very young kid who works there comes over and asks me if I have any questions. I tell him that I have a Boxer at home and want to know if I can pick him up. He tells me I cannot unless I am interested in the dog because people have dropped other puppies.

He then asks, "Are you interested in another dog?" I say "Yes eventually my boyfriend and I would like to get another Boxer from a breeder." He says "Oh no! You don't want to go through a private breeder, you'll get a better dog from us...and this little guy here is your man...or that Puggle over there." He actually said this to me! I made it very clear that we wanted a Boxer...not a Puggle or any other "breed" for that matter. And, get a better dog from them?? I don't think so!!

I tried to stay as calm as possible and then ask how much this little guy costs...$1299!!! From a pet shop! This littleg uy was probably so unhealthy. He took a little poo while I while there and it basically squirted out of him...I wouldn't even call it the runs, wayyy worse. Then I ask his age..."Uhh, I dunno he's really young!" No Sh*t!! This dog was probably at the most...5 weeks old, he was so small!

I then decide to ask about his coloring...he was a really dark color that almost looked brindle but I could see no dark striping. "Is he a very dark fawn or a brindle?" I ask...I wasn't being the friendliest person at that time and I guess the employee noticed because he snipply said "I have no idea!!" and walks away!! You have no idea!? Let me get this straight...you work at this pet shop and you don't know the dogs age or his coloring? Ugh!

This whole thing made me so sad and angry. I said good bye to this little man and wished him a good loving home and the best health. As I walked away I started to cry...this is just too much. I wish there was something to do to stop places like these...

What are the charges for theft of an animal?? I would never support this place with my money but maybe when hes in the play area and no ones looking..... Joking!! (gotta bring a little light to such a horrible situation)

Just like you I get so upset just thinking about all the poor babies in these pet shops. I decided months ago that I just can no longer go in them. I get too emotional, and it's better for all involved if I just stay away. I say a little prayer for all the ones that have to endure this environment and hope like you that they find loving homes and live long healthy lives.

GRRR-sorry long

I can sympathize. Each time we go to the mall ,my dh tries to steer me away from the pet store. He knows what happens, especially if there is a boxer baby there.
I haven't been in one in a couple of years, and it was ugly when I was there. There was a beautiful little flashy fawn girl in the play area. She tried so hard to stand up to get to me,so tiny. So,I opened the door and picked her up.She was shaking and had the worst case of what ws probably kennel cough I'd heard. Her poor little nose was bubbly and runny. My anger switch kicked on. One of the sales girls( maybe 16-17) came over and said she's sold, you'll have to put her down.I just turned and looked at her. I asked her if she realized this baby was sick and her reply was that she'd been checked and was ok. I told her she must be joking and this baby was ill. Then I found the gentleman who was purchasing her for his family. I told him to be prepared to spend a lot of $$ toget her healthy again. He asked me how I could be sure-told him I was no vet but common sense and the fact I have 4 of my own had a lot to do with it.The manager actually came out and told me to leave the store!! I cried all the way to my car for that poor little girl and I prayed she was going into a good home for the love and care she deserved.

Is there not some way a law can be passed that doesn't allow pet stores to sell puppies or kittens? I know it may sound far fetched...but something has got to be done about all the puppy mills...and the conditions in which these animals live in until they are sold. I know a lot of people don't like to support PetSmart because it's a big chain and takes away business from the smaller speciality stores...but they don't sell puppies or kittens...any animals there have been rescued and adopted. And I know a lot of the small specialty stores do this also. Since I have become more knowledgeable about animals....I refuse to go into ANY pet store that sells pups & kittens. I just can't bear to see them.
