little concerened about the free meat idea

I want to apologies upfront if this has already been discussed. I have done a search for it in the threads and I have not found anything, nor am I positive how to properly phrase the search.

Anyway, I have been reading in several posts that many like to get free meat from places like craigs lists. My concern with this is... how can you trust what you get? I would hate to get a hold of some free meat or cheap meat from a source like this which has been tampered with. I would be scared of my dog getting harmed by some bozo out there.

What are your thoughts?

Use your own judgement. If you aren't comfortable with the person you are getting it from, then don't do it. Same goes for the meat...if I can't identify what it is, I won't feed it.

I was also told to make sure it is infact frozen thoroughly. You can check this by trying to bend it on the corner of the counter. There should be no give.

Other than that, I do inspect it, for what that is worth, when i thaw it and portion it to refreeze.

When I refreeze it, I do it for a min. of 3 days to make sure it's killed the bacteria, whatever can be killed.

I have received about 120 lbs of free meat so far. None of it was questionable. But I will always be conciencious about it. I just don't think there are too many people out there who would go to the extent of doing something to it. If they did, what would they get out of it? They would never know if it killed my dog or anything. So, I tend to trust that most would not. And those who wouldn't, happen to have extra meat in their freezers.

i have thesame concerns. I have a lady that offers me deceesed lahmas at a great price. she knows I am only interested in animals that were not given antibiotics or the such. there is a little trust needed there

Also my husbands hunting buddies are often offering us game. I always worry the game was dressed properly. we only accept from hunters we know to be experienced. Still.....

Bottom line, if I am in question the I do not feed.

I just picked up some venison this weekend. It looks like the hunter butchered it himself. Very poorly cut, just doesn't look right. I don't trust it, therefore, it will be in the trash.

So, my first batch of free meat that wasn't worth the drive to get it. Oh well. I'm off to the stores to get those sale meats now. First time in 3 weeks I have to BUY my meat. Dangit! LOL

Guess I couldn't expect to feed them for free forever. But it was worth the free meat and my time to see if RAW was the way to go for my pooches. Definitely worth it! So now it's time for the investment.
