I have a four year old boxer who has developed a limp in her rear right leg. I have taken her two different vets and no one can tell me whats wrong. They think that it might be a torn ACL. or arthritis. The knee joint has some inflamation and they say that there is too much mussel mass in the leg for them to pin point the problem. She dosen't put much weight on the leg and the limp seems to get worse after she runs. Has anyone had a similar problem?

I think you need a different vet....
She needs to be sedated and "manipulated" - looking for the "drawer sign" in her cruciate ligament. Since you've already been to two vets, I suggest you see an orthopedic specialist.
You might also want to join this group - lost of people and dogs going through the same thing......
Been there, done that.

Thanks for the site information. I think I will join. One of the vets I took maggie to was an orthopedic specialist who did sedate her and took radiographs of the leg. Even with all the test they still couldn't determine what is causing her to limp. The vet has put her on rimadyl and a cocktail of glucosamine and chondroition she also asked that maggie be as still as possible for 6-8 weeks. No jumping, running, going up stairs.... I think this has been worse on me then maggie. I feel so bad that she just can't be a dog.

I can't tell you HOW IMPORTANT that part is......it's her only chance to heal without arthritis setting in and not need the surgery. Good luck.

I feel your pain as I am going through this exact thing right now with my Buffie. Infact it could have been me writing your original post because we too have gone through that. Xrays not really showing anything, sedation to manipulate it and still no conclusive results. I have 2 dogs and have had to leave one with my parents so that Buffie can heal.

How is it going on your end now?

I sure hope that Maggie is doing better and you've gotten some helpful info. I don't want to alarm you, but I will tell you what happened to me ( and Brody )
I took my seven year old to the vet, wondering why he was limping and not able to put pressure on his rear leg. He was little overweight and I thought maybe played a little too hard. The vet felt around a little bit and determined that he had a torn ACL. She said she was worried about doing surgery on it, she wanted to wait for him to lose 10lbs before she would do it. I fed him a strict diet, exercised him moderately, blocked him from the steps (sleeping downstairs with him of course ),and kept him from playing with his younger sister.
After a good amount of time passed I could tell that things were getting worse. Not impressed with my vet, I took him to a vet that a co-worker recommended. He felt around, unable to determine what it was, and immediately scheduled exploratory surgery the next day. After the surgery he called to tell me that Brody has a tumor in his knee. In the couple of months since my visit to the first vet, the mass had grown too large to operate on. It was in fact malignant. We had a great six months together after that and then he was gone.
If my first vet had diagnosed the condition inititally, it probably could have been taken out and treated.
Just make sure you've got a good vet who covers all the bases. I feel guilty I didn't do that sooner. I hope tHat you get good news and that Maggie is feeling better in no time. Take care.

Sorry to hear that your girl has a poorly limp. Do a search on here for ACL and TPLO.

My Billy has had his crutiate ligaments repaired in both knees - If you want any further info do those searches and you'll find a whole load.

Good luck

Jenna has had that happen to both legs, about two weeks in between. I took her to our local vet(We just moved). He sedated her and manipulated her leg, and found nothing. He told me it could just be a strained muscle and pretty much just baby her. So I took her home and called our previous vet(who is WONDERFUL). They told me to hot pack it(not too hot) and gently massage her leg. If it didn't get any better to go to a different vet. Within a couple of days of pampering she was putting some weight on it. Then it happened to her other leg. So I followed the same directions and she is fine now. But I don't know if it is from walking through theriver rock or the doggy door.
Give your baby a lot of attention and pampering. Throw in a gentle massage and a hot pack. Good Luck.

Similar

I just wanted to let you know that my dog had a similar problem. The vet I was referred to in Akron, OH originally thought it was the TPLO proceedure that Bella needed. When she went for surgery he went in orthoscopically and discovered that it was her meniscus instead and it ended up being a cheaper proceedure but he wasn't sure how her recovery was going to be. Its been 3 weeks now and she is doing well. She is using her leg more now than she was before the surgery. I would definitly suggest going to a speciallist or a surgeon because they deal with these issues far more than your regular vet and most of these injuries can not be found simply by an x-ray.
