Lily murdered again!

I have a bird's nest under my window a/c in my bedroom, 2nd floor. I leave them because I love waking up to the chirping. I also enjoy listening every day for the babies chirps. Well, one baby must have fallen out of the nest and was stuck on the ground outside the back door.

I opened up the door to let them out this morning and just then I noticed the baby bird flopping on the ground. AND so did Lily! She snatched it right up and took off with it. I yelled at her to "drop it" and I chased her a few feet. She took off out to the back yard. I then looked down and saw the birdie slightly flopping in front of my feet. I picked it up but it was too late. Lily bit half it's head and it was dying a quick death. Poor thing. I looked up at the nest and both parent birds were sitting on the wire watching the tragedy. I felt so bad for them. I held the bird til it seemed to pass and placed it outside the gate. I figured the parents would want to see the baby bird and confirm it was gone. They flew down, inspected and then both chirped and flew off.

I wish Lily didn't always want to kill everything. She causes so much pain in the animal world to those wildlife moms & dads. Sometimes she really sucks!

Poor baby bird :( nothing you can do, though. It's their instinct. Happy has killed two birds in her life, one was a baby! one was bigger :( we currently have two bird couples building nests on our house and I think I will have to make sure to check that all baby birds are in the nest before I let Happy and Sky out!

Oh yes I know where your coming from. Last Saturday my son was playing with the dogs on the back lawn and called me over to have a look at the back of the decking so over I went and there was a bird who must have hurt itself and not able to get away ofcourse the dogs on seeing us looking had to take a peep now in fairness to Roge he just cocked his head to one side and if all be told didnt know what to make of this little cherping bundle then 5 seconds later in charges Spike and made a bee line for the bird my son managed to put his foot out to block him,the bird started making an awfull racket and somehow made its was to the hedge Spike went tearing after it and I was standing there SCREAMING at my son to stop him he just managed to get Spikes back leg and pull him back. I dont know what became of the bird as we decided to leave the lawn in the off chance that its mom would come to the rescue,the poor little thing was so frightened and squaking like crazy.
When we went inside Roge got a treat for being good and Spike on the other hand spent a while on the naughty step.

Poor bird.. I am happy that my dogs have yet to kill anything, although Sadie has come close when she chases rodents and birds.

I had a baby bird fall out of a nest a number of years ago and my previous dog (a sheltie) was so sweet. She laid outside a few feet away from it guarding it for days (other than when I could briefly get her to come inside) and chased away any other wildlife that was trying to get it (we had some mean squirrels in the neighborhood that made a few attempts). The mom would fly down from the nest multiple times a day to feed it and check on it. It was really cute. If the same thing happened with my current dogs though, without a doubt they would both try to play with it and end up killing it.

I can see how it would be read that way. Should have just titled it "Lily is a serial murderer!" LOL

I would have been crying- i love the birds, and haven't gotten rid of a nest on our porch because i like the chirping as you said!
Luckily, I haven't seen Seamus kill anything. Yet. It's always a possibility, right?

The only consolation I can offer is, the baby probably would not have made it, that is, if the birds near you are anything like the birds near me. We have 2 area's of our house where birds like to nest. So over the years we have seen quite a handful of the baby birds that have fallen from the nest onto the ground. We have never seen one occasion where the parent birds have saved them. Everytime we see them, we leave them alone, hoping the parents will come down for the save, but every single time, the baby is left on the ground and dies. So the baby may not have had a chance anyway. I know that probably doesn't help much, but I figured I would try. :(

I was thinking that too! They are sparrows, so they won't pick up the baby and take it back to the nest. So, with that line of thinking, Lily just aided in the quick passing. She didn't eat the poor thing, so maybe she "knew"? Better to think she did than her being a murderer! LOL
