We were treating Lilly with the Metro, Prednisone, and Doxy last month... We also had her on a raw diet.. She started improving, and finally for once in 6 months had normal stool.. No Blood whatsoever... We got her up to 40lbs from 33.5 only 30 days before. She was on these meds for 30 days and just as soon as they were finished, her symptoms came back and just as hard as before...
I decided to carry her to another vet (this is 3rd one btw) to get their opinions.. They looked Lilly over and read all her records. She was given a Barium Mix and they gave me some Charcoal and sent us home to come back in 7 days to see if any improvement. This vet thought she may have a blockage, probably natural.
3 Hours after we got home she passed the Barium and was constantly hunched up like she was trying to pass something. They gave her some more meds to calm her bowels which didnt help. This was all last Friday...
She completely went off food... so I carried her in to the vet Monday and they wanted to keep her for observation, they found 1 hookworm in fecal sample and started treating her for that.. Said she was starting to eat more on Tuesday and that she had cow-patty like stools w/o blood.. They thought she was better and wanted to send her home... we convinced them that this improvment was temporary and to watch her for another night.
Wend. morning they called and said she hit bottom again... bloody diarrhea and off food... they were stumped.. so we decided to go ahead with an exploritory surgery... This morning they took x-rays and found nothing abnormal.. so they opened her up. I was expecting this to be the end to all the worrying and waiting... however they found NOTHING. Said everything is normal, no blockage, no inflamation. Wow.... what a shock... I was expecting something... after over $2000 in vet bills, $1000 just this month, I have NO ANSWERS...
They are thinking now, that maybe all the medicines she was given at the previous vet's office treating her original coccidea and giardia and then bloody stool symptoms , may be a cause of her bloody stool. They are putting her on a HIGH Dose of Tetracycline for 30 days and want us to feed her a Chicken & Rice Diet... if she has any irratation from all the previous meds, they are hoping this will calm everything down... At this point even the vet's are stumped.. and it looks like this is the last Hope for Lilly, I cannot watch her suffer to near death again... Either this helps her, or it's time to let her go...
