Life Vests

After reading a few posts about boxer swimming, being a little top heavy because of their chests, a few pool mishaps, I've decided to get Rocky a life vest before we take him for his first swim. Is there anything specific I should look for in the life vest? Any suggestions?

As you stated Boxers usually sink and my Abby does. I am getting Abby a vest that has both a top and bottom floaty part with handles on the top so that she can float better. I found a nice one on cherrybrook.com so I would recommend starting there.

Nestle and Hobart both have life vests from Outward Hound. I bought them at Petsmart. We had the dogs up at a cabin on a lake last weekend and Nestle swam in her life vest. It did it's job and kept her head above water. You can't ask for more and I was very pleased with the product overall. It also has a handy strap on top so you can lift the dog out of the water if need be. Oh, and these vests are not very expensive (I think around 30-40 dollars).

You can get the same life vest as hobart and my kids from petedge.com. Except it is 12$$ I like this vest it is very sturdy and has velco and snaps... we love it

I am going to have to look into this myself. We got to our camp almost every weekend and it is along the river. The river is very shallow, we can walk the whole way across and the water doesn't go above our knees but further down it gets a little deeper. The dogs are always supervised but Abbie is so small and kind of afraid of the water, that if she fell in, I am not totally sure she could get herself back to the shore. She wants to get in the water so badly when Brady is in so maybe a life vest will help ease her fears.
I want to get one for both dogs just because you can never be too safe.
We are also going to be taking the dogs out on the boat and there is no way I would let them go without one.

*hmmm...off to look for nice doggie lifejackets*

I got my girls' vests at Petsmart. They work wonderfully! No sinking heads!

I got Casey one from Petsmart 2 years ago because we got a boat and she can't swim at all, doesn't even try. Her's cost more than ours but well worth it. She knows she has to have it on when on the boat.
