Okay, i did a search for this, and while i did find examples of people who have dogs who do this, i didnt find any answers or conclusions, and the threads were all 2 years old, so if anyone has figured this out since then, LET ME KNOW!

Roxie has started licking the carpet, out of nowhere! She started licking one spot, and managed to chew a hole in the middle of the carpet (BIG NO NO!).
I have sprayed bitter apple on the carpet, but she keeps going back to the same spot (but has also moved on to other spots) WHATS UP!?

Also, we moved into this house a year and a half ago. The previous owners had a dog that they let pee and poo all over the house so bad that we had to take out the carpet, pad, and sub floor down to the floor joists because everything was rotten. So, there's ALL new sub flooring, pad and carpet. Do you think she still smells something?

anyone that can help or offer suggestions, PLEASE DO!!! thanks

my katie does that too, and i know the carpet has never had a dog on it before mine. i am not sure, maybe it is transfer (shoe, carpet?) i have a little steam cleaner and have run it over the carpet and she still does it, i just get her toy and play with her to distract her from this behavior. would love to stop it....it is real icky to step on an unexpected wet spot on carpet...

RUSH similar habit

There are a few spots in each of his favorite places to lay where he will lick/ chew on carpet, or wall etc.
In the family room he lays on the love sac and he either licks the wall or the brick fire place and soemtiems tries to chew them.

Then a different room he used to lick the wall alot then he started chewing on it, and some how he actually chewed a hole in the wall... dunno how but he did it. (I don't see how he could get a grip on a flat wall)

Then there are certain carpet spots he licks and pulls the carpet string up, so we have 2 parts where our carpet is being unraveled from him pulling it out.

bitter apple seems to be a great temporary fix, but it only seems to work for abou tan horu before I have to spray it again.

oh wow, i hope we dont get to the point where we're chewing through the walls! I bet you keep home depot in business. I know what you mean about the bitter apple, i sprayed the carpet, and she thought it was a treat or something.

Wish we knew, why they do, what they do, when they do it... :)

Choppers Mom, When is your puppy doing the eating out of house & home? When you are away? My first boxer Britnee who is now at the Bridge used to eat and chew everything. This was only when we were away and never when we were home. So, I put her in a crate to stop the bad behavior while I wasn't around! It is the worst thing to come home to a huge mess or even worse a hole in the wall! Think about crating him if this is the case, it'll make things a whole lot better in the long run!

Licking

My dog is 14mos old, and she licks pants, shirt, arm, hand any place that she can get her tongue on. She has a long tongue, and sometimes she leaves it there for about a min.or so. I don't know if its a marking thing showing that it belongs to her or what. Even when she sleeps her tongue is hanging out a little. She is so cute, but sometimes this can be frustrating.

The bitter apple spray has been working for me. I also put black pepper on the window sill and Rocky has not touched them! Good luck!

My dog Stella does this when she is bored. I try to redirect her behavior and if I can't, she gets a time out in her crate. You can also try cleaning the carpet with "white vinegar" which will get rid of any pet smells from the previous owner. White Vinegar is wonderful because it is non toxic, disinfects and perminately removes pet odors. I always have a gallon on hand.
