I think I read on here somewhere that allergies to food can cause them to lick their feet. Do a search and see what you can come up with!

i have had the same prob with tank in the past...... vet fixed the superficial problem with antibiotics and steriods, and we are trying to fix the underlying prob by changing his dog food. we think it is a possibility he is allergic to either the preservatives or the wheat/corn that is commonly in dog foods.

this is the organic food we switched tank to, so far so good (fingers crossed). we use lamb and rice, and bought the cinna treats as well. only time will tell if that is the cause of his rashes and sore paws.

good luck!

Brittany does the same thing....lick, lick, chew, lick, chew.....drives me nuts!!
I have tried changing foods....didn't do any good.
The Vet said that it my just be a habit thing or Boredom, or seasonal allergies.
I give her Benedryl when she becomes totally obsessed with licking and that seems to help some.

I have the same problem with Baylee, she licks her toes all the time, sometimes I will see her chewing them too. I would try to find what the cause of it is...food, seasonal allergies, etc.. since steriods are not good for them. Baylee's gets better in the summer and starts again itching again in the fall, she also has alleriges to food which make her ears get yucky & her chin itch & break out. I changed her food awhile ago and she has done so much better!

Rocco does this too (has done it since before we got him last year) - although never to the point where his paws are red and/or raw. We switched foods and that did seem to help a bit, but he still does it - in fact, as I type this he is chewing away on his back paw. I think now, it's more of a boredom thing. But use the search button, you'll find numerous posts on this - I know I did when I was searching for answers!

Good Luck!

I would say that its definately allergies. When Junior licked his feet red we brought him to the vet and he had a yeast infection in both of his hind legs. She said that if we EVER see him licking his feet to bring him in, that is a sign that there is yeast or something going on.

I would have to agree about the allergies and seasonal thing. Krose licks his feet too. But I have never seen him lick his feet in winter:rolleyes:

YEAST

My first Boxer a now 6 year old male licked his feet constantly as well as around his manhood from the time he was about a year old untill hew saw a new vet about 3 years ago. He licked the front of his toes and in between them untill fur was gone and sometimes raw. His white feet were also turning a rusty red color. Another effect this licking had around his crotch was his testicles seemed too large to me but again before him I'd never seen a set. These periods of licking seemed to come and go which led me to think allergies. So I asked other people with other dogs and Boxers and read all the books along with asking the vet and got a lot of different answers. Most common were "Boxers are very clean dogs and lick like a cat" "All dogs lick that way" "Lets test him for allergies" "It's your first dog don't worry so much about every little thing" and the most common was "Why are you studying your dogs "anatomy" so closely?" Finally he was having a flareup about the same time he was do at the vet for his annual and just after I moved out of state and had to use a new vet. By now he was almost three and was also showing an unrelated symtom, bumps/lumps and I was wanting to have him neutered as well. I explained the licking she looked at his feet then swabbed between his toes with what looked like a Q-tip and said I'll be back in a few minutes. She came back and said he had the highest yeast count/level/? whatever the term she used was, that she had ever seen on/in a dog. She explained (the best I can remember) that all dogs have/produce a certain amount of yeast, some more than others. The change of color on his white feet was saliva stains from the licking. His testicles as it turns out were very swollen from the licking (slightly raw and scabbed in the fold of his inner/upper thigh) which also caused a mild infection which contributed to the swelling. So much so that I had to wait for this outbreak to be cured along with the infection before she could consider the neuter. The cure was IVD brand Potato and Duck formula dog food AND NOTHING ELSE. NO treats, cookies, popcorn, cheese, eggs, nothing but that food and water can go in his stomach or the problem comes back. This also cured the "green onion farts" I also use special shampoo and a leave in conditioner on his coat for his quarterly bath. On the rare occasions I see very subtle signs of an out break (usually after a french fry or piece of popcorn or a strip of bacon) I have a topical spray that knocks it out. That is untill recently when he developed what I thought started as a nip to the tip of his ear that wouldn't heal and also turned out to be yeast related. If you have a dog that shows these symptoms I would recommend you have a vet check for a yeast problem. Also if a specific diet cures a problem with your dog resist those sad eyes and don't stray from the diet; this is a lesson we learned the hard way as the ears take a very long time to heal.

those itchy paws....

In working for a vet for 8 years, I found most dogs..including our beloved boxers usually lick their paws excessively due to allergies caused by food or something where they go outside.. prednisone is usually given or benadryl or hydroxizine...its best to get down to the source rather than treat it with meds constantly.. a spray (gentocin) can help on the paws... I have an American Bulldog as well as my boxer (Petey) and the American Bulldog licks excessively in the spring... but I had also changed his food to turkey and barley and that has helped incredibly... I believe paws are itchy due to allergies... and licking is the only way to relieve this...I have seen many boxers and usually short hair dogs come in with the same problem... *hope this helps!
