Licking and Chewing at paws

Wondered if you all may have any ideas why my female chews and licks at her paws. She seems to do it alot. Her paws also often look red between her toes. I thought it had to do with stepping on something, but she seems to lick at all her paws at some point or other. We do have a large yard and it has rained an aweful lot this summer so the grass is wet alot of the time. Didn't know if dogs could get something kind of like athelete's foot. Any suggestions would be great.

Itchy paws are often an allergic reaction. The most likely culprits are a food allergy but could be an inhaled allergen or a contact allergy. Additionally, once the dog starts licking to relieve the itching, they create moisture in the paws. Couple that with the added heat from the inflammation, and you have a wonderful environment for yeast to grow. A yeast infection causes itching as well so it compounds the problem. See a vet to treat any current yeast or bacterial infections that may be present, then examine the diet and environment for possible allergens. Try eliminating them to find the source of the allergic reaction.

There's no sign of yeast or anything strange. They are just pink between her toes and she licks them alot. Mostly her back feet. Thanks for the replies.

One of my boxers does the same thing sometimes. It's most likely, she is allergic to something...

Try giving your dog Benadryl....25 mg per pound....my dog is 79 and i give her 2 in the morning and 2 at night. she is allergic to fresh cut grass. She chewed them so bad before that she was put on medicine and i had to soak her feet. Now that I give her benadryl every morning she is good. Usually end of summer thru end of Sept she needs it.

Been there with the paw licking, chewing

I had a male boxer that did the same. He had allergies. Your vet can give her an allergy shot. My boy ended up on prednisone (don't go there if you can avoid it). It did the job, however. I'm sure there are better treatments now for your girl. Good luck!!!!
