i was just wondering what age you let your dog start to rome the house while at work, or maybe you dont at all...my dog has been roaming for a few days now...shes 7 months old and so far no accidents or nothing chewed up!

It varies with each dog. KOKO was at about 2 yrs and. Cassius was at about 3 yrs when they could be fully trusted.

Hopefully Kona will be sooner, tho we have not started testing that yet.

You all are braver than me. Sandy is two and still crated if we're not home even though I really think she would just lay by the door waiting for someone to return most of the time. It's not the condition of the house I worry about. I worry she may get into something to hurt herself. Perhaps I'd feel differently if she didn't go to the crate so willingly. But as soon as she realizes we're leaving she runs to her crate and happily waits for her treats, Kong and other special toys. My son is always nagging me to leave her out and we have on occasion for brief periods of time. She always been fine and done fine on her own. I guess I'm the problem, I worry all the while we're gone if I know she not crated.

Samson use to be fine when we left him alone at around 3 months. After I stayed home for a while and then went back he got terrible seperation anxiety. We crated him for only a few days. Everyday, he ended up getting out. We then let him roam the house again. After a few accidents we crated him again for a couple days. Since he hates his crate, he straightened up and now he roams free in the house:).

Liston has had free run of the house for about a year and a half now. (He is 3) He started out in one room and when he didn't tear anything up for a couple of days we would expand his openess. If he tore something up we started him back at the begininng. He figured it out pretty quick and he hasn't done anything wrong in quite a while.

Ares will be a year old this month and she is always crated when we leave if not she will destroy whatever is in her reach.

Kita is 10 months old and is still crated during the week. On the weekends if i'm jst running someplace and it's too cold to take her I'll let her roam the house but not if it's going to be very long. Who knows what she'd find to get into.

Jesse and Beau are a year and a year and 3 months.

We have a doggy door so their are no accidents

BUT............
We have to "Boxer Proof" the house before we leave
1) Bathroom doors MUST be closed or there will be toilet paper EVERYWHERE....inside and outside.
2) All shoes must be picked up or they will be outside
3) ANY clothing must be picked up or it will be outside
4) we "HAD" one plant at ground level in a pot but it had to be put out of reach

It actually isnt much trouble though.....I close spare bedroom doors and only let them in my bedroom because Beau likes to sleep on the bed.

I have found out thru my experience that after two years old they can be trusted with some common sense " boxer proofing " the house. I leave my boxers alone in the house for 4-5 hours at a time with no problems.

I can't really remember exactly what age we let Porter stay out of his crate. We would leave him out for a little time, then more time, then even more time....and it really didn't take all that long until we trusted him out all day. He ate a plant once, and a book....maybe a flip flop but only stuff we left on the floor or at nose level. That was easily remedied.
Good luck!!!

we had to start creating Joe because he did not like his doggie food and he pulled our oven door open and ate our cooked porkchops, he has eaten other things also, he has knocked hole in our walls, and knocked our hat rack over
