Leg lifting

Drake is 13 mos. He lifts his leg when he has to go just a little and squats when he's been holding a long time

He's not "going like a female" - he's going like a dog. Not all males lift their legs. You really don't want them to! Leg-lifting is marking behavior, not bladder relief behavior. With it you may also get marking furniture, marking walls, marking at other people's houses, marking other dogs, marking every little bush and every tree and stump and hydrant and clump of grass on walks, and never fully emptying their bladders as their instincts will be to "keep" some pee for marking... who needs all that, just so the human on the other end of the leash can feel masculine during the twenty seconds a dog is peeing? I hope my Guinness never starts leg-lifting and all the unwanted behaviors that often accompany it.

It's not a "Masculine" thing, I was just wondering. Rooney is the first male dog I've ever encountered that doesn't lift his leg.

Good point. I knew a female husky that lifted her leg all the time. She definitely seemed alpha in my novice opinion. She preferred the company of male dogs and barely tolerate females.

AJ is 1 1/2 and he still squats.... I've been wondering the same thing!

my oscar boy will be three in march and he will only lift his leg when he is in public and when there are people around, but when he does lift, he lifts his leg so high, he has lost balance a couple of times...its very funny...

Rocky lifted his leg from very young, next boxer Rascal never did and lived to 11 1/2. Indiana does off and on, mostly off. Couldn't care less.

What does make me nuts is that he is easily distracted, just like the three little boy children who grew up here, he is always looking around when he is going and frequently pees on himself. Or even stranger, will keep walking while he's going, talk about a strange sight! Sounds funny, but one more reason why he gets lots of baths. Oh well, you get what you get. He's a bit off in many things, but sweet as can be.

Lifting the Wrong Leg

When Kodi first started lifting his leg he’d go up to a tree and lift the wrong leg and pee away from it instead of on it. He’d get the dumbest look on his face. It was hilarious.
