Another issue....Jackson is 16 months old, and has not lifted his leg once. He has plenty of trees to do this on, but no leg lifting yet. Is this normal or is something wrong. Jackson is not neutered.

Is it too late to have him neutered?

My boy doesn't lift either, he's 9 months old and neutred. I did a search and apparently it's not uncommon, some dogs will never lift their leg to pee.
It's not too late to have him nuetered though, It's best to have him neutred earlier. but more harm will come to your boy if you don't get him neutred then will come by getting him done a little late.

Its not too late to have him neutered and I would suggest you have it done as soon as possible. There's really no reason to wait.

Some males never lift their legs and some take a while to start the behavior. Leg lifting really doesn't mean much. If you do a search on it you'll find lots of threads on this topic.

our puppy is lifting his leg every once in a while at 6 weeks. i've never heard of a pup doing it so young, i'm afriad that he's gonna be sir marks-a-lot once he grows older...

Thanks for your replies. Also, just wondering if having an older male dog (a 12 year old Dachshund) in the house has anything to do with this?

Leg lifting for urination is about marking. It is covering a scent of another dog which is higher up and off the ground (on a tree, fire hydrant, etc). Your dog may or may not be a "marker" and may or may not ever lift his leg to pee. Depends on the dog and how we react to such behavior.

Femals will also lift their leg to mark. My Maggie lifts her leg to most any pole or tree that some other dog has peed on. She's such a little "Magic Marker"!

Don't worry about it. Frankly, I hate it that Maggie lifts her leg to pee, but she's a dog and that's who she is so, I allow her. As long as she isn't lifting her leg on ME or something inappropriate.

Well Monty has just turned 2 years old and he only occasionally lifts a leg to mark. I really don't care how he pees as long as it's not inside ;) On the other hand, Diva, my female lifts a leg to mark just about everything in sight

I had a nuetered male lab many years ago that was lazy in his marking efforts. He would only lift his leg halfway resulting in him peeing on his front paw every time.:D He never did figure it out!
