leaving dogs in car

Do any of you leave your car running with the e barke on and the ac on ??

I grew up in Las Vegas where leaving your animal in a car is a very serious issue. In WI I am only comfortable leaving him in the care for 15-20 min max on a cool day near the front where I can see him.

Otherwise, I have a remote starter where I can lock the doors then start the car from the outside. That way, the car is safe, Basil's safe, and the A/C is on.

Aren't you guys afraid of having your car stolen? Someone could break the windows and then drive away with your car with the dogs in them!

Or they could break the windows, kick the dogs out of the car and drive away. So now your car is gone and the dogs are running around the parking lot.

My particular remote starter has a safety feature, if there is no key placed in the emission, the engine shuts down when you touch the brake and you can't shift my car out of park without touching the brake. I suppose that someone could break the window and set the dog loose or worse - steal him :( That would be awful - which is why I always park where I can see him out a window. I guess the only truly safe thing is to not bring them with - but, hey, what fun is that

I too leave them in the car with it running and the a/c going when they travel with me in the car and I stop somewhere they can't go in with me. I've never had any trouble from anyone.

No, I'm not worried about someone stealing my car or letting the dogs out since the car is locked and I have the key on me (besides the one running the car, locked inside with the dogs.

And, I don't leave them in a place where I can't see them from inside the store. Usually its a quick run inside the convenience store (7-11 type) or to get gas, or grab a donut from the donut shop (mmmm krispy kreme), if we don't go thru the drive-thru window.

What bothers me more is when I see people driving with their dogs hanging half-way out the window or even WORSE, driving untethered in the back of a pick-up truck.

I don’t see a problem if the A/C is on and the doors are locked. I have talked to several of the K-9 units in my area and they all leave the car on with the doors locked and the A/C on. The cars are also equipped with a thermostat in them so that if the car gets to hot it will start up and turn the A/C on it's own. This is a pretty neat thing I thought, but I bet it is pretty expensive to equip. When I was an MP in the Army we had a dog die due to being left in a K-9 unit truck that was not equipped as above, this was in FT Drum NY. FT Drum year round not a place where the temp gets in the 90's very often, so I do see the hazards of leaving a dog in the car in warmer weather. I do leave Sarge in the every once in a while, but only with the A/C on and the doors locked. Besides I don’t think there are many people that will break into a car with a 75lbs dog in the front seat? I didn’t know Home Depot would let you take a dog in there I will do that next time thanks for the info Jan.

Anyway, I guess I'm mad because those dogs are soooo spoiled.

I also know them very well, and I know their limits. Minnie, for example, has run around the puppy park for 2 hours at a time. In the middle of the afternoon where the temperature can be in the mid 80s. And when I say run, I mean "sprint" with the greyhounds. No joke. And then I'd have to force her to drink water, because she thinks I'm keeping her away from playing.

Ranger has gone on 3 mile runs with us in the late afternoon. That's 25-30 minutes of strenuous exercise, and I know he has a fun time.

If I truly thought that the people had our dog's best interests at hear, I wouldn't be so mad. You guys may disagree, but dogs are left in the car in Annapolis all the time- not for a very long time though. And again, the weather wasn't bad. In fact, it started raining not even 10 minutes after we talked to the cop. I just can't help but feel that we were being singled out because our car was sketchy.

I don't want to get into the issue one way or another, I have left my babies in there just this weekend to go pay for the gas, but would never do it for any longer unless it was 60 degrees or whatever.

But an interesting fact you should know in the spring and summer time, cloudy or not, the temp in the car rises 20 degrees above the temp outside (even with the windows cracked) and it only takes under 5 minutes to do so.

Just wanted to share that. Maybe it will help.

I am also guilty of leaving the ac on for my kids!!! Its so hot here already and they hate to be left out!!! We never do it for very long but they really do go almost everywhere with us!! This is how spoiled mine are and how obsessive i can be....My parents live in the mountains of NC and its quite cold there in the winter....when i took Sasha home with me for Christmas...i could not bear to leave her in the crate at my dad's house while we went to a get together.....so i heated up the electric blanket and put it in the car for her!! Of course within an hour everyone knew i had a boxer in the car and she was in the house!! Glad to know i am not the only crazy one!!

I drive a mitsubishi eclipse without the comfort of an a/c. I have tinted windows...dark tinted windows. So when I run into the store for a dr pepper Im scared to death for my baby. I cant see inside the car and she lays down in the front passenger seat. I have always been concerned about someone stealing the car, but now Im more concerned about someone stealing my baby...to hell with the car. I have to roll the windows up and lock the doors. Poor baby. :( When I have to take her with me, I make sure that I park at the door to the convienence store and I make sure I have my money out and get in and out as fast as possible. I cant leave the ac on because there is something wrong with it and it makes my car get hot. I make sure shotze is seatbelted in by her harness and roll the windows down when Im driving. She LOVES the wind blowing in her face. I would NEVER leave her in the car for more than 5 minutes. Here in Texas it gets SO hot in just a minute or two. I cant STAND to see someone with a dog in the back of a truck!!! I have seen dogs standing on tool boxes in the back of trucks. I am SO scared Im going to be behind them when they fall out and Ill end up running them over.
