leaving dogs in car

This afternoon, we went to Home Depot to pick up a shovel, rake, and one of those gigantic barrel planters for our backyard. Usually, when we go on small errands, we take the dogs with us. We leave them in the car, crack the windows down, and run into the store. This is exactly what we did this afternoon. We cracked the windows as low as they could go, but not enough to let them jump out of the window. It's so big that they could fit their heads through the "crack" but it's small enough that they can't fit their gigantic chests through.

Anyway, we were in the process of checking out when we hear over the PA, "Will Mr. _____ please report to your car." Fearing that the dogs jumped out of the window, we ran to the car. Well, imagine our surprise when we saw a cop standing by a car. Apparently, some a****** called the cops on us for "abusing" our dogs. A "concerned citizen" was afraid that the dogs were "dehydrated."

Oh puhlease ...

Our dogs do not look abused at all. Shiny coat. Expensive collars. Beautiful dogs!!

Understand that we weren't at Home Depot for more than 15 minutes. It happened between 6:02-6:17 in the afternoon. In the LATE AFTERNOON / EARLY EVENING. THE SUN WAS NOT OUT. In fact, it's raining right now where we live. It's been raining since about 6:35 and Home Depot is about 5 miles away from our house. Also, I checked on the dogs just 2 MINUTES before the cops got there. (I needed a flat bed cart, because the regular carts don't aren't big enough).

I can't help but feel that the a****** called the cops simply because the car we were using was beat-up. It's our gypsy mobile. I've got a stack of library books in the passenger seat that I've been meaning to return. There are empty coffee cups in the passenger seat. There's dog slobber everywhere. And the rest of the station wagon is full of paraphernelia, like riding boots (I ride), 2 life vests (we sail), 2 frisbees, some water guns, etc. I think that if the dogs were sitting in a cushy Mercedes Benz, we wouldn't have gotten a call from the cops.

Also, the self-righteous b**** left us a note apparently saying mean things to us. Something to the effect that "The dogs are dying. You people are bad. I called the cops." The cop took the note away. Wish she left it though, I think we have a right to face our accusers.

So anyway, I'm posting to warn people living in Maryland. Apparently, they take "this stuff" seriously. Also apparently, we got a "warning" - though they did not give us a slip of paper. So if something like this happens again, we can get charged and have the dogs taken away from us.

I've got nothing against the cop. She was just doing her job. Also, she was looking kindly upon us, recognizing that our dogs are beautiful and obviously look like they are well cared for.

What I do have a problem with is the person who called. Yeah, I bet he/she feels really good for reporting law-abiding boxer-lovers who just happen to be not rich enough to drive a nice 'beater car'.

Sorry for your frustration...

Here in AZ it's very serious because of the heat...one time I saw a cop break a window of a car because the dogs were left in the car and they were suffocating. The people were cited by the Animal Control and the police for cruelty to animals. I have to say that if I saw two dogs in the car here in AZ I would most definitely call the police as it only takes about 40-45 minutes for a dog to die here-(just happened last week to a lady that volunteers with the animal control) even in the evening it's usually about 80-90!

Not sure about other states and their rules...

This is a tough call since many people do leave there animals in the car when it is hot...however I live in the NE and it is far from hot tonight. I do realize you are south of me, but I was cooking on the grill around 5:30 and ran in to grab a long sleeve since it was a bit chilly - probably in the high 50's. If I were to run to the store with Mason, I wouldn't have worried about the heat tonight.

I looked through your gallery and your babies are gorgeous! :) Thankfully the police officer knew that they do not look like abused dogs and let you off with the warning.

I can totally sympathize with you. The same thing happened to me last year… I ran into a variety store to get phone cards and by the time I came out, there was some do-gooder standing there “contemplating breaking my windows while I was inside shopping”. How much “shopping” could a person possibly do in a variety store? Mind you, I didn’t have any windows cracked since it was spring and it takes 5 minutes (10 at the very most) to pick up phone cards.
I would certainly appreciate these people taking the time to sit in their cars for about 20 or 30 minutes to wait to see if the dogs are actually in there for that long but they can’t be bothered to do that. It’s just easier to call the cops and pretend you did something good.
That’s my vent :)

Did you know that you can take your dogs into Home Depot? :) They don't exactly advertise it, but they do allow dogs as long as they are well behaved.

I take my boys on frequent rides with me, but usually just short rides, like to the convenience store or Dollar General....somewhere where I can park the car right in front of the store and am able to keep an eye on them(they like to be able to watch me to). However, neither one of my boys like the heat very much and it doesn't take much for them to pant here in SC, so I always drive my car because I can run the A/C for them.Otherwise, if we ride in my BF's car(no ac), we ride at night because it is easier to keep them cooler. Also I like to make it short trips because I have this fear that someone will break into my car & take my boys!I would never forgive myself if something like that happened.

But anyway, I'm sorry you had such a bad experience....all that person had to do was watch your babies for a moment to make sure they were Ok & to see that they are obviously well cared for.Thank goodness the police officer had enough sense to see this!

I totally agree for you to be upset. I think that people should look at the conditions before they over react. If the windows are open, it is cool, and the dogs are not whining. I don't think there is a problem to leave them in the car for a little while. I do have a problem with people leaving their animals in the car in the heat for more than 20 minutes without a open window. But I know how you feel. It hurts for someone to think that you are a unfit parent. Like you don't know how to take care of your furbabies.

Just a little WARNING about taking your pup into Home Depot. We took Daisy there a few months ago and she drew so much attention and praise from other pet owners, we spent more time talking than shopping and only got about 1/4 of the stuff we went for.
