Today, we are going to "officially" meet and play with our new bundle of happiness. She will be 6 weeks tomorrow. I thought that we would bring a towel with our family's scent on to leave with the breeder.

During my reading some say to do this then when the puppy is ready to come home. I guess it will have the litter's ( one other puppy lol) scent on it and it will help calm the puppy the first night at home.

Have any of you did this and did it work?

Would a towel work better than a receiving blanket?

How receptive was the breeder in doing this?

Just ask the breeder. Rowdy breeder sent us home with a few of his littermates toys, but I don't think it really made a difference.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Part of me thinks that it will not make a difference because no matter what its going to be a rough week or so until the puppy gets settled into its new home.

We already have Dakota's old crate that we will be using. I thought I would stick something with the scent of the new puppy's litter, but my dh thinks that it wont help. Also, I thought that we would stick a Hearbeat Bear that my son had near the crate. It was used when he was a baby to mimic the womb.

Of course, my dh said that I was going overboard and said that Dakota didn't have all this. My reply was, " I didn't know any better back then."

I will talk to my breeder today. I just think that if a trick will work, I will try it.

Tyson's breeder sent us home with a blanket. I also do not think it made a difference one way or the other. He acclimated very quickly, LOVED playing with my, then, 5 year old Boxer female that was here, my, then, 5 1/2 year old son, and we absolutely did not have a rough week (just saying don't expect a rough week as a given), he was crate trained from the first day he was here, never whined or barked in the crate, played well with my older girl, switched to his new food without issue and did really well. We personally never had any problems at all.

Well, I talked to the breeder about leaving something and they said that they will send a "care package" home with us and not to worry! They honestly felt that after the first couple of days that the puppy will do just fine.

Thank you both.

I will be posting about our visit today on a new thread. It was wonderful!

We just got our lil puppy 1 week ago and had toys from his old home and once he got here he didnt even play with them.
The first night he stayed in his kennel and he whined a lil bit I put in the toys and it didnt help at all it was not until I put in one of my shirts in there that he quieted down and went to sleep.
Enjoy your new baby

I lost my favorite robe to Olive! When we brought her home somehow she just knew I was the new "mommy". The only way I could get her to calm down in the crate at night was to put my soft fluffy robe in her crate, of course it had my scent all over it. She would just snuggle right into it and go to sleep. Now, she won't give it up. I sure miss my soft robe though!
