Leash walking....

So this thread is about my foster dog, Pepper, a deaf white dalmatian/boxer/pit? mix we think - anyway - she's been with us for a month - but I'm starting to get really frustrated with her. She has an oral fixation with biting and eating EVERYTHING! Our toy selection has diminished to marrow bones, antlers, and kongs with bullysticks as a treat. Any other 'heavy duty' toys that people know of that can withstand her beatings?

Also - and this may be my biggest issue - she has destroyed 3 nylon leashes. She gets excited and just eats chews through them - once in the house still before a walk, then she got hers and rocky's leash in the car on the way to daycare. You should have seen me bringing them in with little 6" leashes.....(for her i had to use the rest of the leash as a slip lead - since i didn't trust her with just 6" - Rocky was fine and just stayed by me)

Has anyone used chain leashes? I've been researching and I feel wrong buying one - but the 20-30$ investment will be worth it if we have her awhile - and she already has cost me 60$+ of leashes in 1 month! Any other advice? I have tried bitter apple and correcting her when she goes for it but its hard since she can't hear me......

I hope it wasn't Rocky's Designer Leash! LOL

The one Debbie suggested is a good one. I prefer the looks of those rather than the chains. If she is chew obsessive, this is a better choice. You don't want her to break teeth on a chain one.

I would probably try a chain leash (we did with Johann as a puppy because he was obsessive about attacking his leash). Only took him 1 or 2 walks to figure out that it wasn't fun anymore.

You could also try a thick horse lead rope, would take her a lot longer to chew thru. Something like this: Heavy Cotton Lead - Lead Ropes from SmartPak Equine

Or, Lupine brand collars and leashes are guaranteed to be chew-proof (they aren't really, but you can return and get a new one for free when they get chewed thru). Tail Feathers | Lupine They do last a long time when being chewed (my parents beaver/bernese mt dog managed to only destroy one in a year).

My mom suggested this

Take whichever leash you're using and hook it to their collar. Then, take the leash down their back to the back legs and wrap the leash around and then up. Instead of the leash pulling them from the back of the throat, this way will pull around their stomach area and will cause them to be more calm during the walk. We have tried this with our deaf White Boxer and it works a lot better than the traditional way of walking with a leash. I hope that helps!
