Well I have had Pimp for about 5 days now and I am not sure if he is learning his name. I use it all the time when praising him and talking to him however I am not sure if he knows it yet. Does anyone have a clue on how long it normally takes for a puppy to learn his name and come when he is called?

Be careful not to over use his name. Then it just becomes another word and he won't react to it. When I was teaching Tyson his name, I played a little game with him. The first couple of times I would hold a treat in front of his face and say "Tyson" and pull the treat towards my eyes so he would look at me. As soon as he made eye contact, he got the treat. After doing it a few times that way, I let him get distracted and I would say "Tyson". If he didn't look, again I would lure him to look at me and give him a treat when he made eye contact. Now that he knows his name I don't use it unless I really want his attention. If I call him and I don't really care if he comes or not, I'll call him by a nickname.
Hope this helps!

i agree with mancin. that is a good tip on teaching your dog his own name and to respond to you when you call him.

Your baby will learn, give it time.

I brought my Gretchen home at 6 weeks (which I know now was'nt so good), and imediately named her on the way home. My husband and I would play with her and say *good girl Gretchen* or when she went potty outside, the same thing. After she started to get around more and want our attention, we'd call her by her name and pat our leg or the chair. She's now 11 weeks and knows her name. She will come to you anytime you call her (unless she's sleeping, she goes deaf when she sleeps). lol. Just give your puppy some time and he or she will learn. Boxers, I am finding out too, are incredibly smart so you should'nt have any problem teaching them anything other than using the toilet ;)appicon

Pimp has actually be doing A LOT better. I taught him to sit the other day and he is starting to respond to his name unless occupied withthe neighbors dogs.

It took Zoe about a month to fully learn her name. Now you can tell she knows it bcus she looks when you say it. The first month i had her I taught her to sit, stay, lay, crawl, jump, come, and hide. They learn real fast when you use soft liver treats. Zoe didnt like the dry treats bcus she couldnt chew them. I worked with her for about 15 mins every day on something. Good luck Abrea
