laying on your lap ok?

Is it ok to let your dog crawl up on your lap and take a nap? My Laila is 8 months old and she has just recently started crawling up in the recliner and plopping down on my lap and going to sleep. She usually only does this at night when we are winding down before bedtime. During the day she will just lay in the floor on her bed. Now personally, I don't mind it and it is kinda nice to cuddle up with my girl and relax. (Plus she keeps me warm during this cold weather). Anyway, I have read that letting your dogs sit/lay in your lap without you calling them up is like letting them sleep in your bed and is putting the dog in an alpha role and leading them to believe that they are the pack leader. She has not shown any signs of aggression, and I feel that she knows that she is not the alpha leader of the home and I would like to keep it that way. Does anyone feel that letting her sleep on my lap could lead to problems later on?

Forget all the dominance theory stuff you read about, it is out of date.

Boxers are big lapdogs who like nothing better than to have a good snuggle, and I don't think you will find anyone here that disagrees with that! As long as you are happy to let them sit on you, then that is fine. My two both pile on me, to find a bit of mummy that isn't already occupied by the other!! It's great!

YES, please place that "alpha" nonsense in the trash where it belongs. Laying in your lap is perfectly fine - as long as you invited her up. This has nothing to do with being "Alpha" or "pack leader" and has everything to do with your dog having manners. Have you heard of NILIF?

My two always "ask" if they can come up on the couch. I prefer they do this because my 75lb boxer used to like to hurl himself on to your lap and that's just rude.

I let my boy cuddle up with me all he wants, I personally love it! I think its all up to you to decide if you want to allow Laila on you and your furniture. I do agree with Furface, I don't think you have to worry about the dominance thing. My boy is 8 months as well and has always been able to sit/lay on me and we have not had 1 problem with wanting to be the alpha dog. So if you like it, enjoy!

Billy has to ask before joining us on the couch, and sometimes it is just not OK - we tell him no & he goes back onto his bed. He always gets off when told. We all love a boxer cuddle.

Cody is my 3 year old 73 lb lap dog...... . He isn't always invited up...but he knows in the winter months that he is almost always welcome to snuggle bug with Mama. When told to get down or get off he always does...I firmly believe that there is nothing to do with dominance. When it is chilly it always feels good to share body heat......and snuggling with my sweet fuzzy boy is one of my favorite times of the day lovicon ....gas and all .

Lucky You!!! Lily is almost 3 and just in the past 2 months has started to cuddle. She would always cuddle with our staffy, but never with us unfurry humans. Since Bella crossed the bridge, Lily has lowered her standards and finds me a good replacement for snugglin'. I have waited a long time for this!

We have a cream L shaped leather sofa and as such were afraid of little claws taring it!! So we have a duvet on one part of the sofa and Frankie knows this is her place to sit and doesnt go up on the leather. She doesnt have to ask as its her space, i sometimes have to tho as she takes over the whole duvet and i love snuggling her so i have to move her big bum over!!!
