Lameness that moves from leg to leg

I have a boxer mix (probably with St Bernard) who I got from the pound. He is quite large and at about 7 months he woke up one morning and was unable to get up. The vet thought it was a muscle injury and we treated it as such. About 6 weeks later his right leg became very swollen and x rays showed a fracture that had not healed in an ideal way. After consulting specialists we were going to do surgery to repair but he magically became much better. The very next day I took him back with an excessively swollen leg, this time all the way into the hip, the hitch was it is the other leg. Now we are thinking auto immune disorder. He seems also to not have good control of his back end which frequently collapses. Does anyone know of a good resource where I could read up on this?

I don't know of any resources, but just wanted to say sorry to hear about your dog's leg troubles--sounds painful for him and frustrating for you to not know how to help! Hope that you and the vets are able to figure it out and he is able to feel better soon.

Thanks

Thanks for your kind thoughts. I have 4 boxers and I thought he would be least likely to have problems since he is a mix. Wrong again! The prednisone seems to be doing the trick. I was hoping to go a good long time before we faced major problems. I lost a boxer, Ferguson who was near and dear to me from liver failure last Easter. It is my hope this will dissappear as quickly as it appeared. My fear is that it will do him major damage. He is one of the sweetest souls I ever met and the goal right now is to improve his quality of life.
