Hi guys! We have our new baby home with us. I know I said in my last posting we were naming her Torah but decided it sounded a little too harsh so she is now Mali.

I have been reading the threads about crate training trying to get some tips because she really does not like the crate and alot of people suggest kongs with peanut butter. I have kongs and have done this with my previous dogs but am wondering if a 10 week old puppy is too young to have peanut butter? Does any one know? Also, any suggestions of what brand/type of peanut butter to use? (I know not to use crunchy, just want a more natural one with not a bunch of junk in it.) Thanks!

I don't think she is too young for it. I would use natural peanutbutter, for example from Teddy (saltfree). Obivously don't feed large amounts, but a stuffed Kong here and there should be fine. You could also use canned food and freeze the Kong, lasts longer that way.

Is your pup food driven? You could try wetting her kibble to soften it, then mixing in a little p-nut butter for extra flavor, stuffing the Kong with the mixture, then freezing it. The Kong will last longer that way, plus Mail can eat part of a meal this way, while entertaining herself.

Good choice of name!
I use plain yogurt and kibble in kongs to keep my two occupied. I needed to find a brand of yogurt that Oscar can tolerate because he has a sensitivity to corn, so anything with cornstarch was out, but he does fine with plain Dannon.

I usually do alternate layers of peanut butter and kibble, so there doesn't end up being TOO much peanut butter. Just enough to form a nice frozen "barrier." And I have never worried about brand/type, honestly I just grab whatever we have in the cupboard for us humans. :) And puppies of that age can definitely have PB.

You can get creative with what you put in there, though. I've done mashed up bananas. Yogurt. Canned dog food. Freeze-dried Stella & Chewys (which I then run through water after the Kong has been stuffed, so that the patties rehydrate). And I always freeze them.

For her though, the first few times she has a Kong I would make it easy for her to get the goodies out, just so she doesn't get too frustrated and give up.

Peanut Butter

I purchase peanut butter from a Whole Foods store that permits you to grind your own peanuts to make the peanut butter.
