Kongs are great... Super Boo, if your boxer gets sick with the peanut butter, maybe you could try filling the kong with canned puppy food and freezing it.

I have been told that Peanut butter may cause diarrhea, it is also important to note that peanut butter is fairly rich so putting other things besides peanut butter in the kong is a good idea. If your boxer does get diarrhea there are many great recapies and things you can put inside the kongs. :D (cant wait to have a boxer of my own to fill his kongs for him!! hee hee)

I have tried PB, cream cheese and yogurt all mixed with cookies and frozen. No matter what I try, Vegas rips through them in about 15 minutes!

I wish they would last longer. I even bought a smaller kong thinking he might not be able to get his tongue in so easy but it doesn't matter.

Any ideas what else I can put in there??

MacFish, if you use dry treats such as dried liver etc..then you could jam part of a hard dog biscuit into the top of the kong, leaving a space JUST big enough for the treats to fall through. Vegas would then have to manipulate the kong in order to shake the treats out. This way they get a double reward - mental stimulation as well as a treat.

Our Piper loves this - she picks up the kong and throws it on the ground to try and dislodge the biscuit!

Is my Rocco weird? He doesn't like the Kong! Any other dog I've known or owned loved them, with or without treats inside, so when we got Rocco in October, the first toy I bought him was a Kong. Since then, he's touched it probably about 5 times and half of those times were because it was in the way of another toy he wanted!!

More Kong Success

Ok. I tried the Kong thing again. Boo is now 8 mos old. She has had it a while (since about 3 mos) and not been interested at all--I think it's the rubber thing--she hates the taste.

Anyway, since I'm trying to make her crate stay more enjoyable, I took your advice and stuffed it with Mother Hubbards cookies and plugged the hole with peanut butter.

After day 2 she has been BEGGING to go in her crate and milling around DROOLING while I prepare it. appicon

What about messes?

I'm reading all this about peanut butter and cream cheese, etc (and besides getting hungry) I'm thinking - what a mess! To assemble and while the dog is trying to eat it! :eek: Are you folks right there with a washrag or what? I'm thinking even if the boxer licks everything to death it's still dog spit everywhere! Or is it really just not that bad?

Just speaking for myself here, but I've never had a problem with messes. You freeze the kong after you fill it (or I do) so it's froze hard when they get it, and by the time they get done going to town on it, it's empty:D

You'll have to forgive my ignorance. It's been about 15 years since I've had a dog and then I was really too young to remember loving a pet so much you don't care about dog spit.

Mason has his peanut butter and treat filled kongs in his crate - and yes, he makes a mess. His crate bed, however, is a twin comforter folded in 4. I am able to refold it throughout the week and wash it at weekends to ensure he is never lying in peanut butter - it's been working really well! The rare occasion that I let him have a kong outside the crate, I'll usually be sitting next to him and holding it - yes, he's totally spoilt!!
