Kona Refuses Dog House

can't figure out why Kona will no longer go into her dog house.

Some dog's don't like crates either Sadie has terrible SA and I believe the atmosfear where there born has alot to do with it, Sadie was born out side in a barn with heat lamps and a open field, Star in side around family and kids. I tried for months to crate Sadie for safty reason's but it didn't work, Star on the other hand was already crate trained. If the food doesn't work your giving Kona Iv'e tried many different food's do to Sadie's IBD and found Natural Balance Duck and Potato works great

I do not think you could melt any of my 3 and pour them into a doghouse.LOL They have the wire cages inside. I also have one plastic one that Max slept in (it has been washed and bleached) and they will not get in it. They like to see what is going on around them.

If its the same dog house you have used for another dog some dogs will not go in because of the scent that is in there. She simply may think it belongs to someone else???

My Isis does not like for me to be out of sight, and when I am not there, she surveils her kingdom. Maybe Kona doesn't like being tucked away in a dog house because she can't see evrything?

Now that there's resolution on inside vs. outside, I'd like to revisit the dog house question.

I can't figure out why Kona will no longer go into her dog house. The other day--a nice, unseasonably warm day-- I tossed a treat into her house. She stretched out like a telescope, but she wouldn't set one paw in her house.

Any thoughts?

My boxers would have no clue what a dog house is or that they were expected to spent a moment in one let alone sleep in one...They (boxers) really do believe they are a part of the family circle and want to be close to their skin kin just like any other member of the family..I do however draw the line on sleeping in my bed...The kids do like him in theirs though...

Just want to commend you on not bolting out of here (BW) for some of the harsh criticisms you endured (justified or not), you handled yourself quite well.

Maybe she doesn't like that it's dark and enclosed.

Maybe it's the male/father in me, but I couldn't with any self-respect, utter the words "my Boxer's afraid of the dark" any more than I could say so about my 15 year old son. Must be a guy thing.

I have to let you know, that Bently will only go into the igloos if one of the other guys are in there, you will never see him in one alone. Tonight will be a "slumber party" night because it is going to get cold...by my standards...in the uper 30's lower 40's, and I don't leave anyone out in those temps. My daughter has two boxers that are inside dogs, but she also has dog houses outside and neither one of them will go into one. Bently goes in because of the companionship, of course this is only during the day. As we speak...so to speak, he is at my daughters have a boxer play day

I don't know what it is about Igloos, but dogs love 'em. I might look into switching.

Someone asked if Kona's house is new or used; nope. Brand new. No other dogs. I don't know think any other animal's ever gone in there since it's in an enclosed area. But who knows; last month we had a week-long cold snap where temps were got down to -20. Kona was in the house that whole week, so maybe the neighborhood bobcat took up residence in there for a while.

First let me say WOO HOO for letting her back inside.
I'm sorry if I came across as nasty, but I just lost one of my precious babies and it's hard for me not to speak up when it "seems" as if their owner doesn't care. Again I apologize if that was how I was.
NOW.....:D My Boone has a phobia about any kind of confinment. He would absolutely freak out when I would try to get him to go into a crate..I have no idea why. Maybe it's just part of her personality and she assoiciates it with something bad and will never go back into it.
Good Luck..they are a struggle, but the adoration and joy they give is SO worth the trouble.

From what I've learned of boxers, they crave company, whether it be their humans or other dogs. Like I said, Bently won't go near one of the igloos unless one of the other boys are in there. He naps during the day, when outside, in them with one of his brothers, but prefers our company. He loves to get up in the crook of DH's leggs and sleep. Boxers just don't like being alone. As far as the type of dog house, I just happen to have 3 igloos, never tried the others.
