Does anyone have any suggestions for getting your dog to stop eating Cat feces? We have two cats and they go potty outside so we do not need a litterbox in the house. However there is this spot in our backyard where the cats do their thing. Zoe, our 5 month old female boxer loves to go to that spot and help herself to the poo poo buffet. I would love to be able to leave her in the backyard unsupervised sometimes but I don't want her getting sick from eating that stuff. Not to mention I don't want her licking me or my kids after that. Yuck!

There really isn't anything you can do except, deter your cats from going there. Kitty stool is a delicacy to dogs, cats eat a food higher in protein and the extra is then shed out through the feces, which is highly enjoyed by dogs....you can't mask the odors, as I am sure you know of there keen sence of smell....maybe you could change the landscape so the cats arn't attracted to the area. maybe put some rocks there, offer the cats a pile of sand somewhere outside the fence? Think in that direction.........:confused: You may want to watch your dogs for any signs of worms until you get this corrected, as I am sure your cats are good hunters? Good Luck Cindy

I think that there is something that you can buy from pet supply catalogs that you can put on your cats food to make their excrement not so tasty to your dog. I think I recall seeing the product at PetsMart, and in the Foster-Smith catalog, or J.B. Wholesale pet suppy catalog. It may be worth a try, because I sure would hate to have a big slobbery boxer kiss after they dug up and ate that *treat*!!!:eek:

Please don't waste your money on products! If drug smugglers can't figure out how to cover the sent of drugs, pet stores haven't made a product that will work! You have to take the attraction away.....................................................Cindy

That's a good point. I haven't personally tried the product, but have only read about it. The one that I am referring to though, has nothing to do with the smell of the feces, but from the catalog description that I just found in "The Dog's Outfitter" catalog, it says: "Gives feces an upalatable taste, and discourages pets from further contact. A vegetable protein to sprinkle on food." So, if you can't get the kitties to move their potty area, it may at least be worth a try.

This may sound harsh but I heard putting a few drops
of Tabasco on the offending poo will do the trick! A couple
of my friends who have very well trained dogs recommended
this.

ARGH! My dog does this too! It is so very disgusting. He digs it out of the litter box and I'm also worried about the effect of the kitty litter on his stomach - especially that clumping stuff that soaks up and expands with moisture. We TRY to keep him out of the litter box by keeping it in a seperate room, in a closet behind closed doors, but we have to let that cats have access so occasionally the little fart gets in their and pigs out. If you find something that works, please tell me!

Aggghhh!! I too have this problem! I have tried to move the litter box where Boz can't get it, but if the cat can get there, Boz can get there too since he's practically attatched to the cat's side. The tabasco sounds like a good idea, but am I supposed to check the litter box and put a dash of it on every piece? If I was going to go to that much trouble, I would just clean it after every poop..... I'm not quite that ambitious yet but I may have to change if I wanna keep my bozzie on a poop free diet. I'm just relieved that other dogs do this too...I thought my Bozzie was abnormal (well I guess he is, but i love him anyway)
