Hooligan was 9 when he developed kidney problems so he had long since outgrown the chewing phase so it was not an issue, but with Mack my foster he is a chewer but he just chews on his other toys.

For treats there are some things you can give them provided its low in sodium and protein so I would give them pasta or bread. But every situation is different so check with your vet. Also on the website I suggested I found rescipes for homemade treats that were ok for the kidneys.

I hope Shaq contines to do well

We bought the hills k/d wet food and baked it into treats which Garrett would eat. He also didn't like the k/d but hunger did eventually win out for him :(

I found the website which I used to order my Sub Q supplies in bulk from which was much more affordable than getting them from my vet. Hope this is of help.

Hi there!! Thanks for the info. I will keep it in mind if it comes to Sub Q treatment. So far he is responding very well to the diet change. He is actually gaining weight now. YEAH. They say that he only has between 1 mo and 1 year to live...he looks better than ever now with the new food. Amazing! He even runs at the dog park now (instead of just laying there watching the other dogs.) They decided to try an antacid with the food before they do anything else. They will wait a month and then check his levels again. So far the BUN levels are staying low and the creatinine level is still a bit higher than they would like but it has shown improvement.

I registerd with the k9kidney board, but I have not heard anything from the "owner" he or she still has not given me approval. How long does it usually take? I registered about 1 week ago.

Thats unusual you should get a reply for the board almost automatically. You might want to try again.
