We are receiving our boxer soon and are deciding weather or not to use a kennel or a doggy bed for the puppy. Odin will be staying in a specific section of the house when its time for all of us to go to sleep. The area will be gated off and he will have plenty of room to move around since we are giving him half of our dining room as a home. Also would adding puppy pads so he can pee at night delay the housebreaking?

Congratulations!! Love boxer pups! Need pics soon!

As for the puppy pads, I always advise against them if at all possible. What it does it teach the pup that pottying in the house is ok. Later when a pad is not available, then a t-shirt or blanket will do! Yeah, don't wanna start that problem on top of housetraining! Plus you will have to teach potty training twice - first to go on the pads and then second to get off the pads and onto the outside lawn.

IMO, skip the pads and be very diligent on proper potty training techniques. Every 15-30 mins fo out, after any play go out, after any excitement go out, after every meal go out, etc. If you are diligent now, you will have years of clean carpets and no hidden poop presents.

Oh, and to help in the potty training - feed meals don't let food out with access. You want to get that pup on as much as a consistent schedule as possible. Then you will know their poop and pee schedules without having in between messes!

Can't wait to hear more about the puppy's new life!

Awesome thank you for the feedback. I had thought that the puppy pads would have a negative impact on the house training and I fully agree with you on that.

We opted to not use pads or paper. I take Roxie out no less then every hour, some days are better then others. Yesterday was trying.
I prefer a crate. I like that she has a "safe" place to retreat to when she's done with the kids. She has taken to sleeping with no fuss after the first week in her crate bshe does have soft bedding that's easily washed. I use baby blankets, and old t-shirts.
