I took Buck to the vet last week for a cough that he had developed. We thought that he had eaten something, but the vet decided she thought it was kennel cough. She placed Buck on Clavamox and tenaril-P #28 and stated there was some other form of anti-biotics, but she didn't want to put him on it because it could cause problems for puppies. Fast foward a little bit, and my brother's boxer who buck stays with during the day went to the vet to get meds since he had been around him, however, they gave Otis a completely different medication and he is only 1 month older than Buck. Buck has gotten worse in the week he has been on meds, but he had to stay outside in a cold garage while visiting my parents for a few days. i just want to make sure that Buck is on the right meds, or if I need to worry about either of the dogs. This is my first puppy and all this stuff kind of overwhelms me. Am I overreacting or do I need to go to another vet?

I try not to visit the vet at all for these small things because it always seems to me that they are so quick to prescribe anti-biotics when some liquid vitimin C and Robitussin will heal our dogs just fine from kennel cough.

Kennel cough can last several weeks, so I'm not too concerned that he hasn't improved yet. Just keep up with the medicine now that he's started on it and hopefully it get better very soon. I wouldn't give him Robitussin now because I have now idea how it'll interact with your anti-biotics, but vitimin C should be fine for him...

Your puppy shouldn't be on antibiotics at all. Kennel cough is caused by a virus. Antiobiotics won't do any good except to make things resistant to them. Unless there is some secondary infection involved the antibiotics were just a waste of money.

Prevention is better than cure as what most people say.... All my dogs got their Kennel Cough Shots but even though your dogs have shots like this they will still get it based through my experience... My Snoop also had Kennel Cough even though he had shots for it. I was so worried sick as he was coughing so badly, at first i thought that he just swallowed something that caused the coughing so i called my vet and consulted him about the problem and he told me to just observed and give him plenty of water and after about a week the coughing just stoped.
