Lance has joined the kennel cough club it seems. Man it sounds terrible. Even with all his hacking he's in good spirits, so I'm not too worried. From what I've read antibiotics are pretty useless, so I'm forgoing the vet right now. I just wonder where he picked it up. He also went to puppy school yesterday. I'm assuming I should call and tell them? He wasn't showing any symptoms until last night otherwise I wouldn't have taken him. For all I know he caught it there. Poor guy. I'm going to give him some honey right now to see if that helps. If not then I'll scope out cough suppressant (it's not a productive cough). I saw gmacleod's link about what's ok to give.

Funny thing is I'm coming down with a cold or the like. Got a sore throat this morning. We can be miserable together :D

He was probably exposed 7-10 days ago, so didn't catch it at puppy class last night. Children's cough syrup will also help.

Since it is a virus, antibiotics are a waste of time and money.

Hang in there, it is always worse right after they wake up.

Thanks Cheryl!

Yes, the mornings are really rough. He wakes up around 4:30 and the hacking begins. I let him out to pee, then some honey and back in the crate for a few hours. We keep telling him to lay off the cigarettes :D I've been a good dog owner and haven't been walking him as to not spread the love to other dogs. I'm waiting for Murphy and Mia to start. Hopefully their immune systems can fight it off.

I don't know how I missed this thread!! ...

I completely feel your pain ... both my babies came down with it at the same time. I gave them echinacea and goldenseal in their kibble along with crushed vitamin C.... they both got childrens cough syrup and amazingly it cleared up in less than a week for us. THANKFULLY .... Cooper was so much worse than CoCo was I just tried to keep them both quiet and broke all the rules by just letting them lounge on the couch with me under the blankets so they would stay quiet. The more active they were the worse the coughing fits got.

Lots of luck .... and i hope you get some sleep ....

How old is your precious boxer. Our's is 4 months and we have been noticing a little cough here and there for about a week. And like you, we have been alittle under the weather too. Is children's cough syrup okay for a 4month puppy boxer?
