Since the medication is finish ( 2 days ago ), Pénéloppe's kennel cough is getting worse. She's coughing more, she has a lot of nasal discharge and her eyes are running. She was playing and energic yesterday, but this morning, she's sleeping, staying on us, she seems to look for heat (I think she may have fever). She ate about half than usually, and only because I mix some bacon in her food. I know that kennel cough is supposed to go by it self, but is it normal that it's getting worse after the end of the medication? Any idea of something that can help my baby? I hope I don't have to go to the vet again...

Jaelle,
How did your pup become infected with Kennel Cough? Sounds like you will have to make a return trip to the vet. The fact she seems to seeking heat concernes me.

Good luck and keep us posted.

PS. I'm just down the road from you, in Cornwall.

Jaelle, I think a trip back to the vet would be a good idea. She may need a different medication. It's better to be safe than sorry.

I hope she is feeling better soon. :)

Poor pup!!

Our Striker contracted Kennel Cough when he was only 4 months old. He had the vaccination also. Apparently he was exposed too soon after getting the vaccine. Some people feel he could've gotten it from the vaccine also.

He had a little bit of nasal discharge, but he was mostly sleepy, and had a very bad cough. When he woke up in the morning, it sounded like he couldnt breathe, he just coughed so much. (And this was on vacation in FL!!!)
So the second we got back to our vet in MD, he believes what was kennel cough turned into bronchial pneumonia. There was fluid in his lungs, and they had to take x-rays and do all kinds of test, CBC, etc. So...a few hundred dollars later, and after about a month of expensive medication, he was all better.

Some people are now telling us this illness at such a young age may have stunted his growth?? But I don't think I believe it.

Good luck, and make sure your vet does a thorough checkup, listens to heart/lungs.

Sorry, it's been a long time before I gave you some news... I called my vet, and he told me that it's normal if she's sleeping a lot with her kennel cough. He says that if the secretions stays clear, transparent or light yellow, it's normal and it's a sign that the cold is starting to end. For the cough, if the sound don't change, if it's still from the troat and not from the chest, it's ok too. I have to keep the air warm and humid, so I let a towel to dry on her crate every night. It's been two days that her nose and eyes has stop running, the cough as not change yet, but I'm still hoping... And after the day I wrote that kennel cough was getting worse, she was running and jumping everywhere like she use to.

You can also ask your vet for a cough supressant. Not only was Lexi on some horribly expensive antibiotics when she had kennel cough (and she did get worse before she got better) but she was on 1000mg of a cough suppresant (something that starts with a k kekatose??) and it helps! Good luck and she sounds as if she is getting better :)
