You're right. (Just like with our kids...) Thanks.

Yeah vets seem to be going through now what human docs went through in the 80's...an over prescribing of antibiotics for everything. So just make sure to use them wisely. Maybe hold onto them and if it turns icky them use them.

So is that what this is?? Kennel cough? My female is hacking too. She only does it every so often. I'd say 2 or 3 instances a day. Is this something I need to be worried about? I thought maybe it was allergies. Could I give her benedryl to help a little? I'm not familiar with kennel cough. Is it fatal? She acts somewhat normal do I need to take her to the vet? I'm a little worried. I don't know where she could have gotten this. My wife and I just had a baby and she stayed at my in-laws for a couple of weeks but their lab is healthy and they haven't mentioned anything about Jake doing the same. What should I do?????

If it's kennel cough it's no different than you getting a cold so no it's not fatal and no don't give Benedryl.

If it isn't kennel cough coughing can be indicative of heart problems among other things so if it doesn't clear up or if she hasn't been out where other dogs commune (ie a dog park, park, PetSmart, boarded, etc) then it may not be kennel cough and may be something more serious or allergies (although coughing usually isn't a common symptom of allergies in dogs).

Good luck.
