So all of you who taught your dog to bark at a noise or someone at the door, how did you do it?

Megan doesn't bark at people coming into the house and I would like her to let me know if someone is here. So any suggestions?

I started out by teaching Samson to go get the kids, they would play hide and seek and he would find them. That was only for the "GO GET" command, then I switched and whenever we heard a noise, or someone rang the doorbell, I taught him the command "GO GET THE BOOGEYMAN", after awhile he just started doing it on his own.

Do boxers bark? I think not. Ok, I admit, occasionally when there is someone or something (raccoons) outside on the porch, but other than that my 18 month old
brindle Harley rarely barks at all. When I first got him, I took him to work with me (a vet clinic in Silverdale, WA) and asked the doc why he doesnt bark. "They just don't" was his reply. So don't expect them to be great burgler alarms, they'd probably unlock the door for them!

heheheh!

when i first got conor, he didn't bark at all. this was a problem during housebreaking, since i never knew when he needed to go out. he would just sit and stare at the back door and have an accident if i didn't notice. i then trained him to bark when he wanted to go out by barking at him when i put my hand to the doorknob to let him out. that was a BIG mistake.

he now barks when he wants to go out...however, going out does NOT necessarily mean when he needs to poop or pee. if he decides that it's time to go out and play, sniff around, explore, etc. he'll bark. he'll bark at other dogs. he'll sort of vocalize (whooo, whooo) when i tell him to lay down (aren't boxers stubborn and strong-willed?)

of course, he'll get all riled up and bark when i go "who's that?" or "go get em!". heheheh.

most of the time, he'll just lay around (boxers can be VERY lazy) and is content just to have company.

Wednesday doesn't bark very often, usually only when she wants to play. When she does, though, we need to be ready to cover our ears! You would never believe such a nice little puppy could make such a loud, scary sound!

I don't believe it! First the kidney bean dance, now wooo wooo? I thought these were Clio tricks, not Boxer tricks! Clio does the wooo - wooo (part nose, part throat apparently because it makes her sneeze) when she wants something - food or out usually. She only barks when she sees someone on her street or to say hi to her buddy Beau, the neighbor's shepard/Newfoundland cross. I think this is a definite benefit of the breed. We haven't tried the "who's here" to get her to alert us to someone in the yard which my husband would like for her to do.

We now have our 6th! boxer. Every single boxer was different with their barking but mostly they only barked for a good reason, like a stranger at the door. We had one boxer for 15 years and I don't think that she barked more than twice in her life, and that's when she was playing with the other dogs. However, we now have a three year old female that is VERY vocal. She barks for EVERYTHING!
She barks at people walking by the house. She barks at chipmunks, squirrels and other animals. She barks when she wants to go out, and when she wants to come in. She barks and whines and howls,(it's almost singing) when she wants attention and does not stop until we play with her. She cracks us up. We've never seen such a vocal boxer!
