Hello.
This is my first post to the board so bear with me :o)
I bought an 11 month old boxer and he has been with our family for a month now..He is CKC registered and a beautiful brindle. We have not heard him bark at all yet!!! I have 2 children ages 2 and 4 and he plays with them and grunts and so on but we have yet to hear a bark. He was a show dog before we got him....are they conditioned not to bark for show ring purposes?
Just thought I would ask...we did lots of research on Boxers but I have never come across anything on Barking......

Thanks :o)

Oh yes, they do bark. Maybe it has to do with the way your dog was trained. I actually trained my Samson to bark only when he heard a noise, or when someone came to the front door. Now he never shuts up. My other one a pup just started barking around 5 or 6 months old. I love it they have these big deep scary barks when they are on alert.

I don't think boxers are excessive barkers.

Mine only bark when there's a good reason, like a stranger in the yard.

So all of you who taught your dog to bark at a noise or someone at the door, how did you do it?

Megan doesn't bark at people coming into the house and I would like her to let me know if someone is here. So any suggestions?

Draco hardly ever barks!!! Even when all the dogs are barking he doesn't.
When we first got him from the rescue and he never barked for almost 10 days.. we thought maybe he has been debarked by his previous owner ....and then one day when we had put him in the crate and was about to leave the house he gave a deep bark. After that we have heard him bark only when we leave the house without him and nowdays he doesn't even do that. And when soemone approaches the house he wags his tail but never barks--at times I wish he did!!!! :)

My Maggie barks, but only during our play sessions. She barks at her ball and other toys, and barks at me when I say "no bite." She nibbles now, but still barks and fusses at me. Also, if I don't get her food fixed fast enough for her, she'll bark at me or "wooo wooo."

Maggie hasn't, however, barked at any noises or strangers or the doorbell ringing. She even loves the garbage men and the postman! Some guard dog. :)

I think this is one of the many great things about boxers-they aren't very vocal. Only when they think they really have a need to bark they do. I thought the same thing about Tyson. He hardly ever barks even when other dogs are barking. It really is nice when you take them camping or off somewhere where you don't really want them to bark. :) Don't worry though, I'm sure if and when the need arises your boxer will let you know if something is amiss.

Zoe only barks when someone comes into our yard or enters the house. The doorbell ringing isn't even a cue. She didn't start doing this until she was about 5-6 months old. Luckily, she and Jake never bark unless it's someone around the house they aren't familiar with. They never howl at sirens or bark at birds, etc. We never had to teach them this though, they just did it on their own.

Casper only barks at Sumi when they're playing - it's a really shrill, high pitched bark, I'm scared he's going to start shattering glass soon ;). I thought he'd "learn" to bark from Sumi, because she barks at almost everything going on outside - she hates trucks, car doors opening and closeing, the post man, strangers near the house, cats or squirrels in the yard, etc. Casper just satnds next to her looking at whatever she is barking at as if to say "What's wrong, it's only a cat?" :)

I do think when he becomes more familiar with the house and routine he'll probably bark at people coming to the door or starngers in the yard. We'll see.
