We just moved to Ft. Lewis, WA from Alabama. Fort Lewis is about 45minutes to an hour south of Seattle. I have two boxers - male pup, 9 months old (about 70-80lbs) and a 3 1/2 month old female pup (about 20lbs). I am looking for new playmates for them- especially the older one who is use to playing with dogs his own size or bigger and misses playing to his capacity. Plus, I would like to keep them both socialized. I was wondering if anyone from BW lived in the area and would like to get the dogs together sometime or knows of a place good for socialization (i.e., dog park)???? Also, we love to go hiking and go to the beach so any advice on dog friendly trails would be greatly appreciated. We went to Mt. Rainier - but no dogs allowed (although I'm not sure if they really enforce the no dog policy since we did see a person with a little dog - maybe they just thought it was a chipmunk - ha ha). Thanks

Hello and welcome to BW :)

I grew up near Ft Lewis and lucky for you Tacoma got their act together and created an off-leash dog park at Fort Steilacoom. I haven't gone since it's been official but my family and friends enjoy it a lot.

Plus, I'm trying to get folks together for a play date in Seattle east King County called Marymoor Dog Park - I think it was the first off-leash dog park in our state. Here's the link to the Thread and Directions - would love it if you can join us. We usually have a good showing and have had as many as 25 boxers at one time :D!

I just took Elvis and Arwen to Ft. Steilacoom dog park last week. I was a bit nervous bringing both of them at the same time for our first visit - as two of them can be a handful at times (esp. in new situations). However....they really made me proud and we had a fantastic time. They even befriended a 10 month old black lab. They frolicked around and had a great time- we all had a blast. I think dog parks are terrific idea (as long as there aren't any aggressive dogs there).

I haven't been to marymoor yet, but will probably check it out in the near future. Which one have you heard better things about????

So far I am in love with Washington and plan on never leaving. I'll take rain over the deadly heat any day!!!! There is soooo much to do here I can't imagine ever being bored. I do wish they allowed dogs at Mt. Ranier though- I think Elvis would have a fantastic time and it is one of my favorite places to hike.

Dogs are only allowed "where your car can go." That is, campgrounds, roads, & parking areas. Dogs aren't allowed on any of the trails. You'll find this info on the Mt. Rainier site under Frequently asked questions section.

Thanks for the info on the dog park in gig harbor and the companion's guide- I'll definitely check both out.
