Rocky was fine earlier today and was even out playing in the snow, then just a little while ago as I was going to get in the shower he looked up at me and his eyes were all swollen! I was like OMG. Then I noticed him rubbing his face on the carpet (trying to scratch it). I immediately called the vet and took him there. He was still breathing fine and other than the facial swelling, he seemed fine. They told me to bring him and he could wait there so they could keep an eye on him until the Dr. came in at 2.

I checked the apartment to make sure he didn't get into anything and I was near him all morning and didn't notice any strange behavior. I didn't see him eat anything while we were outside today either. He was out playing in the snow and that's it. Has anyone else had this happen before?

My dog Adriane had something similar happen to her. she broke out in hives all over her body and her ears swelled up really big. She had been inside all day so i don't know what could have caused it, but i gave her some childrens benadril and the swelling and redness went away

Wow-scary! I've never had that reaction.....could be some kind of environmental fallout in the snow....pollution stuff....has anyone put out any snow melt or salt?

sidhewlf, I didn't see anything on the sidewalks...they were shoveled and that was about it. He was mainly in the grass jumping in the snow.

Caseyt, just in case this would ever happen again, how much benedryl do you give your dog?

This really scared me and I was especially scared that he'd swell so much that he wouldn't be able to breath before I could get him there. Luckily, the vet's office is really close to where we live.

It might be from a spider or bug bite too.

As far as benedryl goes, it depends on their weight, check with your vet for correct dosing.

Thanks for the reply. No, nothing has changed in recent days. It was just so odd how it happened very suddenly. I'm sure the vet will be able to offer me more ideas on what could have happened. I think he just had some sort of allergic reaction to something, I just wish I knew what it was!

I was thinking more about this and we live on the 2nd floor of an apartment complex and they are putting a restaurant in below us. I was wondering if fumes or some sort of dust was getting into the apartment and that might have caused it? I just wish I knew.

I think I will go downstairs and ask those guys what they have been doing in there the past couple of days. When I looked in the window last it looked like they were almost done actually. I could be wrong.

I'm sure the vet will give me the correct dosage for Rocky. *Sigh* I can't wait till my boy is back home and feeling better.
