CONGRADULATIONS!
I rescued my Boxer from the local SPCA last September. She was a little over 1 yr when I got her and she was underweight as well (ribs showing). I was told by the vet that she was not as underweight as she looked and to be careful not to put too much weight on her. I just gave her good quality food and she looks good now. Some people think she is skinnny and comment on her needing to gain weight, but I think they are mostly just uneducated, because my vet says that Shelby is at a good weight and that Boxers are really not suppose to have alot of excess meat on them. Shelby gets 2 cups of food in the morning and 2 cups at night. She is around 60lbs and is about 2 yrs old now. If I were you, I would talk to the vet and see what he/she recomends about feeding. Also, do some reading on this board about the different quality foods that are out there. When I first came on this board I was surprised to learn that some of the foods that I thaught were good foods were really not that great. Good luck with your new family member!

Feeding a good quality dog food, such as those mentioned above, will help.

Barron's vet told me that Barron is at the perfect weight of 63 pounds. He cautioned me not to let him get above this weight. You should be able to see their waist. Barron once approached 67 pounds, and looked a little chubby. I put him on a diet (I should have gone on one with him ) and he dropped the weight.

Congrats!!

I know EXACTLY what you are going through! I adopted Tyson from the Humane Society, he was underweight, and just had surgery (neutered) but he was cryptorchid. So he was a pretty skinny guy. I put Tyson on Royal Canine Natural Blend puppy to give him some extra calories and let him put on some good weight. It worked great and didn't bug his tummy, and then its an easy switch to Royal Canine Natural Blend Adult :)

I have had Tyson for almost a year and he is my best friend. (check out rainbow bridge section "you are my inspiration" describes how he and I came together)

I really really recommend Royal Canine Natural Blend puppy because its tasty for them and a really good quality food.. you dont need to use it for long (I just bought a small bag ~$16.00 cdn gave him that and mixed it with adult)

had great results.
best of luck with your new furbaby Im sure you both will be soooo happy with each other.

Just looked at your pictures...Your Samson doesn't look all that under weight...actually he looks pretty darn good for coming into a shelter and all of that trama. A good solid food and a steady diet now should turn him around for sure.

I just checked out Samson's picture. He is certainly a handsome boy. I really don't think he needs to put on weight, though pictures can be deceiving. I thinks he looks pretty good. Boxer should be kept on the thin side and you should be able to see the last three of his ribs. He should have a very obvious waist. Samson will live longer healthier life if he is kept at the right weight. Just feed a good healthy diet.
