He was turned over by his owner who did not have time for him. He was on death row and we saved him. He is purebred and so handsome. He is very skinny and got a clean bill of health. WHat is the best way to put some weight on him?? I saw something on another board about satin balls? Is this just for sick or for underweight also? He is about 8 months old and still a playful puppy. He love to be rubbed all over. How can I post a picture on here for all to see him?

TIA

ashley

Congratulations!!

Normally you can go to the picture galleries and upload pictures, but they are closed this weekend. But after that, just follow instructions and it is pretty easy. Can't wait to see him.

I have heard about, but not tried, satin balls as a good way to add weight. I think there is a recipe here if you search. And make sure you are feeding high quality food if feeding kibble.

Are you sticking with his name???? What is it?

First of all CONGRATULATIONS! what a guardian angel you were.

Now, mind you, this is just personal advice, i am not a trained professional, About his weight, boxers are normally skinny looking dogs, my little girl looked underweight until she was about 3.5 yrs old, then she started getting the middle age spread! you may want to go to the health forum here and read through a few posts about puppy weight, and talk with a vet. they might be able to tell you if your puppy is underweight or just typical. Also, if the pup was neglected and then taken to the pound, it may have been too nervous to eat, and a few weeks in a loving home will fix things up right.

I just know, it is much better health wise for a dog to be slightly underweight rather than overweight. But, in the end, this is your judgement call. Good luck and again congrats on getting one of the worlds most wonderful fur people!

We did keep his name it is Samson. We decided he had been through enough so we would keep his name since he knew it. I will post pictures monday morning.

The first boxer I ever knew was a Samson!!! It was a great name for the dog.. my potential FIL used to sing him a song all the time "he's a sammy dog, a little sammy dog, sama-rama ding dong..." and on it went. Great name for a doggie. Can't wait to see pics!

Lucky Samson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Samson is a lucky boy! Can't wait to see his pictures! Keep us all posted on Samsons progress, in a couple of weeks you will see a big change in him,he will settle down & start bonding. Is Samson your 1st Boxer? Boxer Pal, Hanley

first off...congrats!

secondly, he probably wasn't getting a great food in the pound, and as someone else said he may have been too nervous to eat. Our boxer girl was always a skinny little thing as a pup, and picky-picky about her food. But when we switched her to a premium quality kibble she filled out (even had to cut her down a bit), and we've never had problems w/ her getting to eat since. Anyway, she was getting nutro for a long time, but we switched to Natural Balance premium kibble, and she looked great in a matter or weeks. So...my advice is to get him on a good kibble and give him time. Also you can add a little fish oil, which is great for their coat, but gives them extra calories (oh, if only I were a dog!) they may need to gain a little. Some good foods are:

Natural balance
Wellness
Royal Canine Natural Blend
Innova
California Naturals
Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul Dog Food (I know the name is corny, but it's good)
Canidea
Solid Gold

You can find lots of posts and info about these foods (and others) here on boxer world, and here's a good link for more info on a ton of dog foods:http://www.greatgoldens.com/reviews/dogcomp.htm

Congrats! Thanks for saving a precious sole.

I rescued Toby at 12 weeks of age from a shelter in Austin through a boxer rescue.
I just kept feeding mine several small meals a day and the ribs finally stopped showing. I could not believe how skinny he was. He is 15 months old and 75 pounds now. So even though he had a rough start in life, he still grew up big and strong.

Offering frequent meals is a good way to help a dog gain weight - he might only want so much at one sitting, so try feeding three or four meals a day instead of two.

OH Congratulations...and I love the name...if i am ever permitted to get a third....he will be a brindle boy named Samson!! How cool!
Your baby needs good food and some mix in's should help....our two put on 10 pounds in two months eating Chicken Soup dog food and mix-ins...some rice, oatmeal, and i added in fruit too just to give them some variety!
Good luck and hope to see pics soon!
