LEYNA

Boxer Pal
I have been wanting to switch over to RAW feeding completely, Leyna gets some chicken and such mixed in with her kibble and has always been good with that however I would like to switch completely now with Sultan being here.

So my question is this, I have a butcher pretty close to me and I would like to go there to see about getting the "supplies" for my dogs but I am not sure what exactly to ask for aside from the usual.

Should I ask him for things like leftover scraps? Do butchers have things such as that? I have never personally shopped at a butchers, I have always just gone to the grocery store, LOL so the whole trip would be new to me.
Any advice? Thanks.

Yes, scraps from the butcher would be fine. I recall that at least one other member of this board has gotten meat that way. Some other members put ads on Craigslist for freezer-burned raw meat or scraps that would otherwise be tossed, and have had GREAT success that way -- me, not so much :)

I personally have never been to a butcher either; I get most everything from the grocery store. My dogs are not eating raw 100% of the time though. Most often they get chicken quarters, as those are cheap and easy to feed. I also get liver (beef and chicken), ground beef, pork steaks, and even ribs from the grocery store (I stock up on whatever is on sale).

Raw food should be fed on its own as a meal, never mixed with kibble. The two digest at different rates, causing the raw food (and the bacteria that comes with it) to remain in the system for much longer than it would on its own. So, you can still feed a partially raw diet if you like, but raw food and kibble should be fed about 12 hours apart from each other.
