Jumping

My boys are a little over a year old. Everyone I talk to that has had a boxer says that they had problems with them jumping their fences. When we aren't home, our boys are in there kennels. I'm afraid that if I leave them in the back yard they won't be there when I get home, but I want them to be able to be in the backyard instead of there kennels most of the day.

I leave Tre in his crate while I am at work as well. I might be over protective, but, it's always better safe than sorry.

not sure what type of fencing you have, but I had/have 5-6 ft wood/privacy fencing and have never had an issue with jumping. My first boxer had free roam of the yard while we were at work (I'd leave the sliding door open, he could go in/out as he pleased) and no troubles. At one point we lived in a duplex that had 6 ft fencing on all sides except where our yard bordered the attached duplex--this was separated by only a regular chainlink fence and still no problems with jumping--even though there were two dogs on the other side to entice him! Whether on not your dogs will jump the fence depends on them individually, I wouldn't say all boxers are fence jumpers--thats like saying all pitbulls are aggressive or all teenagers are rebellious...

We have fence on all sides of the yard we never have had a problem with our two jumping over. We also have a kennel with a 4' fence in the yard. No problem there either. I believe you have to start them slowly to the freedom the yard is . We we did is make it a great place that they don't even want to leave. We have all kinds of toys for them to play with lots of shade and sun. We even put a kiddie pool in the yard for them during the summer.

BTW--Smith & Wesson are beautiful, I just checked out your gallery! Where in CA are you located? Gracie & I are just outside Fresno and we are always looking for other boxers to meet! We usually go to the Fresno Dog Park to meet up with Gracie's littermates...

good luck with the fence/yard. I would start by letting them out when you are home and see how they do. just be sure you are checking on them often at first, of course. and as the other poster said, it helps if there are plenty of distractions and playthings in the yard to keep their interest so they don't go looking elsewhere--also, are they neutered? that will make a big difference in their desire to jump the fence and wander as well.

Thanks for the compliments. Thiose pictures are old, maybe I should upload some new ones.

Anyway, they have a doggy door so when they are home they can go outside when ever they want. The have never tried to jump the fence. I know they are capable of it though. I don't know if I'm being over protective, but I don't know what I would do if I lost one or both of them. They are my babies. I love them as if they were my kids.

My girl easily jumps our 6 ft high vertical slat wooden fence. It is no match for her. There are rabbits and kitties on the other side of the fence that she REALLY wants to go play with. Put them out there for awhile and see if they jump it! Test them out - maybe they won't be jumpers. My girl is but we've fixed that problem.

Smith & Wesson have free reign of the yard when we are home and they don't try to jump the fence. I'm just worried if we leave them out there alone all day, if they'll try to jump. They hate being left home alone. We tried to leave them home alone out of there crates and after an hour thye had already torn the couch up. It's like they rebel when we are gone, that's why we keep them in there crates so they can't get into trouble.

How did your stop your girls from jumping your fences?

We have a 6 ft wooden privacy fence in our back yard. It is a good thing because if we didnt Atlas would jump it.

If they do turn out to be jumpers, or you decide you aren't willing to take the risk to find out, could you build them a covered dog run along one side of your yard along the exisiting fence perhaps (less labor/materials?) I am not sure what type of fence you already (wooden privacy fence or chainlink?) But if you have a privacy fence that is about 6 foot, you could create a chain link run along one length of it the same height and then cover it with a canvas sunshade or something....that way they could be outside, have a bit of room but no escape worries--and the rest of your yard stays nice too!
