My 7 1/2 month old male boxer, Kane, has a problem with jumping when people come to our house. We did what we could to socialize him when he was young, but realistically he spends the majority of his time with me, my wife, and our 7 year old silky terrier, Puddles. I have read through this forum many times only to find suggestions of "tell him down, reward him for doing so, and be patient." My question is (1) does anyone have any other techniques that have worked and (2) at what age should I expect him to grasp the concept of not jumping up on people?

Keep a leash on him when he is around people. You can simply step onto the leash when you expect him to jump. When he site, reward him.

Sorry, that was supposed to say, when he sits give him a reward. You will reinforce the behavior that you desire very quickly.

You have to train your visitors !

Seriously, they must ignore the dog when they come into the house. You put him into the sit position, and once he is calm, only then can your visitors acknowledge him. There are lots of threads on this in the training/behaviour forums - and it works!

(Try enlisting a few friends to help you practise this technique)

Good luck!

It worked for us

What Biff says is true! This is how we keep our dog from jumping. Everyone must ignore the dog until he is seated(and the guests are seated). By ignoring, that means no eye contact, do not say his name, do not touch the dog (even though you are not doing the first two things), and wait until he is seated calmly. It is important that your dog knows how to sit first, because if he doesn't, well then this isn't going to work. Commands are essential for pack order and to make your dog feel like he is pleasing you, which they want to do. Good luck!

I agree. Keep a leash on him so that you can keep him calm and from jumping up. When you meet your visitors at the door ask them to ignore Kane. Once everyone has settled in you can slowly let Kane go up to meet them. It really is true, once he learns that he does not get any attention for bad behavior he will decide that the only way to get extra loving is by being a good boy!

I agree with Biff. Our boxer is 2 years old and still jumps on people when they walk in the house. Well, just today we tried what a trainer told us to do. Have the person ignore the dog, tell him to sit, give him a treat. Have the person coming in throw him treat until they get used to him. Well it worked today and we are so proud of sully.
