I have 2 boxers, Rocko & Shayla (both 9 months). They loooove company! But, they scare most people off because right away they bark and want to jump on them (all while wagging their tails of course) but it's overwhelming for me and my guests. If it's an expected guest, I will either make sure they have their collars and leashes on (still doesn't stop them from barking or trying to jump on them) or I make sure they are in their kennels when my guests arrive and I won't take them out until they calm down. Of course, once I do take them out, they are jumping again (but atleast they've stopped barking). Once the guest is inside, it takes them about 5-10 minutes to calm down and then they go back to normal doggie stuff and they are playful and fun and cute again. If it's an unexpected guest.....well, that's a whole different circus. Has anyone had this problem and found a way to calm them down a notch or ten?

Harley who's 5 months old has the same problem. I put him in his kennel and after he calms down I let him out only to go through the same thing again. If I put him outside on his runner he barks the whole time company is here. So, I'm in the same boat as you are. Maybe someone could suggest someway to calm these babies down. :-O

Try filling an empty and rinsed soda can with coins and tape the opening shut. Then shake it whenever your dog is doing something you don't want him to do, like jumping on people or barking, and give some kind of command to go with it like "QUIET". Try "OFF" for jumping up instead of "get down" cause "down" should be saved for lying down. If your dog is anything like mine, he or she will not like the noise of the shake can or actually be scared of it. Delilah will sit and hang back when guests come if I even just have the can in my hand. Hope this helps.

maybe you could practice by having "arranged"people come over at certain times to help you practice. when they knock or ring the bell or whatever, have your dog sit, once they come in, they completely and wholeheartedly ignore the dog until they calm down and earn the attention, once calm, they can be showered with attention, but the second they start jumping or barking remove every bit of attention, eye contact included...they should get the hint barking adn jumping are not the most efficient ways to get what they want. then after you practice awhile, just ask any visitors on the side to ignore yourdog until they calm down...i think during this you could use the word "off" for no jumping, do they know this command--or another one to mean the same thing?
I did try out the "ignore" tactic a couple times when my mother-in-law came over and it didn't stop them from jumping on her. I may still try A 'planned ignore visit' and see how that goes. I think to do this, we'll also have to be consistent ourselves with ignoring them each time we take them out of the kennels. I'm sure it'll take some time for it to sink in to them...if it's gonna work at all. It's worth a try! Thanks for the input.

My girl 2.5 yrs old does this all the time, she gets Sooooo happy when people come over, super boxer wiggles and jumping up, it's annoying how she jumps on them. It's funny though, for some reason everytime my mother comes over she won't jump on her. Not sure why, but she'll just go up, smell her, and walk away. My mom is a little afraid of larger dogs and it's almost as if Ally knows and respects that.... weird. I wish she did that with all of our visitors!!!

We are having the same problem. Yankee does it when company comes over and he really does it at his training class. He is only 12 wks so everyone wants to pet and love on him. He gets so excited and jumps & pulls on his leash. My trainer suggested that we tell people that our dog is in training and please do not touch him until I can get him to sit and calm down some. She says that Yankee wants attention and when people touch him, even to push him down from jumping, they are giving him what he wants. She says not to touch at all!! She says... this will work with practice. I hope so!! I know he is just a puppy and it will take time!!!!!
