Jolie got her ears taped today - finally!

Well, two weeks later - Jolie got her ears taped. Last week he (the vet) said they were still raw in a few places - said there's more chance of infection if he tapes them before they are healed. Said come back in a week. (Heavy sigh) So, today, I held my breath while he examined them thoroughly then da-da, out comes the tape and stuff. he wrapped those little ears up nice and straight. She doesn't seem to mind at all. She looks so funny with those pointed little ears all wrapped in white tape. I can't even begin to imagine how she would have been able to stand it if they had been wrapped right after the surgery. It would have been extremely painful. As it is, she doesn't seem to care at all - she knows something is odd but she hasn't figured out yet what it is and she doesn't even try to scratch the tape off. He said he tapes them a week - tape off for a week then come see him and we will see if they need to be retaped. This can go on for awhile - u neve r know - or they may stand up quickly. That would be nice. I asked why we leave the tape off for a week and he said you have to give the ears time to have good circulation. You can't leave them taped up for too long at a time. - Keep your fingers crossed that they stand up nice and pretty. It really hasn't been that bad so far. The only bad part was that first night home after the surgery. She bounced right back (literally) the next day. Just had to watch where she tried to stick her head.

I'm from England where as you know the cropping of ears is banned. I just want to know why you think that cropped ears look better, I for one think that boxers look so much better with natural ears. I'm not trying to start a argument I just want to see what everyone else thinks. Also if it is ok for the dogs why has it been banned in England

Mike69, if you want to disuss this topic, you are asking for trouble, there is a spot (i am not quite sure where) on the board where this was debated. Your best bet to find it is to email on of the moderators to find it.
But welcome to the board.

DeeDee,
congrats on Jolie for not messing up her ears, i bet she is wondering "what the heck in on my ears mom" get lots of pictures of her now, so you can smile even more later on. :D
Will she have to wear the cup?? I never got bandit's ears done, and i always wondered exactley how he would react if i chosen to get them done. Just think soon she wont have to wear the tape and she will have beautifully cut ears. One again, congrats Jolie.

I'm glad she finally got them taped up. Hopefully it won't be much longer and her ears will be standing beautifully on their own in no time. :D

I agree with Bandit's mom, get lots of pictures now. You'll love looking back at them later. :D

Mike69 - For someone preferring the cropped look over the natural look is just an opinion. There doesn't have to be a reason why, they just do. Some people prefer fawn over brindle, they don't know why they just do. As for it being banned in England and not here the only thing I can think of is maybe there was a lot of ear crops not being done correctly in England. All 3 of mine have been cropped and I know it isn't a big deal. They are uncomfortable for the first day but afterwards they are fine. I don't think it is any more painful than spay/neuter or a female giving birth, and if done by someone with experience is no more dangerous.

Just my opinion.

Zach looked so silly with his ears taped, they seemed too big for his little head. At the park one day a litle girl, maybe around 4 years old, says "Mommy, look at the reindeer" :D I don't think Zach heard it or maybe he would have been insulted ;)
Good luck with Jolie she sounds like a cutie!

Did your vet put popsicle sticks on Jolie? When I had Shiloh's ears done, he had to have sticks and tape. His ears were beautiful. I didn't crop Indy's ears. He's such a nervous ninny and he's a mooshy boy and would look funny with cropped ears. Beauty's ears are beautiful. I don't know who did them. I adopted her from rescue in New Orleans.

There are many ways to wrap ears, and for myself I like to leave them wrapped for 3-5 days then take them down for at least 24 hours. If Jolie starts shaking her head, or it smells bad, then they need to come down. Good luck, and I hope you're taking pictures!
